Default starter problem?

so my cars starter takes a rediculously long time to start. and sometimes it grinds when it start. i think its sometimes isnt engaging on time or it doesnt disengage at the right time. is it time for a new starter? im pretty sure it is. but is it eay to take out? i think its like 2 bolts and its pretty much under the intake and the by back end left hand side of the valve cover. so is it easy?

its easy to take out, two bolts, then a wire attached with a nut, and a wire that plugs in. take it out and look at it. see if the gear on it looks stripped or damaged.

right, but if its not it doesnt mean its not bad, the gear could not be releasing right either. the way you described it it sounds like its bad.
