Start small or big?
Im doing my first engine swap here. Looking at the B20/Vtec or just straight b16a w/ boost into 93 civic. I want to go fast but the budget is tight. Gonna build the engine first then drop it in in Jan/Feb. Any help would be great.

If your budget is tight, start off with the B20 Stock.......you will still have a lot of power and can convert it to VTEC later on.

If your budget is tight, start off with the B20 Stock.......you will still have a lot of power and can convert it to VTEC later on.

and if your budget is tight you could always buy a b18b, save up here and there and build the internals, then save up some more and boost it...or go lsvtec
or if you want to go b20, buy it stock then go vtec later...

Can't beat stock reliability. ls/vtec & crvtec will cost alot of money to build it up right. prob more than the cost of just saving up and buying a b18c5. JMHO

b18c5 is a waste of money......
waste of money? goes for around 5500...
. Unless you meant shipping and all...People here are telling you to just drop a B20 for now but they are forgetting the intake manifold sits too high for the Civic body. You'll have to get a B18B head so the hood will fit.
If you're going to boost, I'd reccommend the LS motor with a B20 block, because I personally think LS/VTEC with boost is too much trouble.
For an all motor B20/VTEC makes a lot of power, but make sure you build it RIGHT. I'd just go with a GSR motor and build it from there...

ok 4800 plus mounts to fit plus wirring plus shipping ect ect a 4800 dollar engine easily becomes 6500-7000 dollars with installation ect.
My recommendation is to go with a b20 engine the JDM b20z then run a si trans and skunk 2 intake manifold for the LS. This engine becomes about 155 hp +/- a few from 143 has a significant amount more tq. than other engines and has great gearing. If you can afford a little more the 98+ spec type R trans has even better gearing which is why a car like the lotus elise which only makes 120hp stock can run a mid 13 in the 1/4 and a 0-60 of 5.0 flat in some tests.
Of course with bolt on you can increase the power significantly and that still leaves the internals which can be massaged to produce incredible power N/A. And best of all this route will run the same or slightly less than just the b16 swap complete.

Why dont you price out your b20 with si trans the same way you priced out your itr swap?

well in my instance it's a waste of money......i got a good deal on a b18b and for the amount it costs for a c5 installed, mounts and all that i could have a fully built b18b that would smoke that c5....sorry i didn't clarify...and if he's on a budget it wouldn't be wise to go with a c5.....

you dont have to change the b20 head. just the intake manifold. id go with the usdm b20z or jdm b(same hp right?). then get gsr tranny or ls if turbo for sure. your car will rock ***** compared to where it is now. then vtec head later if you want. you may decide just to turbo the stock b20. that is my plan, b20,gsr tranny, turbo later.
