practice practice practice..... if you have your license and dont require anyone to be in the car i found it best to be by myself so i didnt have to listen to anyones comments or suggestions. you have to feel comfortable driving your car and you cant do that with someone in your ear telling you youre doing it wrong.

Find a very flat, empty parking lot.
Put the car in first.
Put your right foot on the floor, not the gas.
Now, see if you can get the car moving smoothly.
This will help you figure out where the clutch engages.
And, like others have written, practice, practice, practice.

LOLz.... stoppin is maybe easier than eating food........ But im in the same boat when it comes to starting smoothly. In my dads Accord I stalled it many times, spun the tires even more times (partly cause its fun and partly because i cant raise my foot off the clutch slow enough), Stall-Started it...those Honda's dont stall without a fight, and once or twice pulled away smoothly... But practice made me almost perfect, raising my foot off the clutch...and the engaging point was what fucked me over the most.

Re: Standard transmission?? (VTECTIME)
Hey, i've never driven a stick, but I've driven other cars (yes i suck at it ) and I was wondering, are 6gen civics really forgiving cars as far as letting the clutch out (a stock clutch), like is it hard to lug a start? cuz I drove an mx-3 for a couple of days (actually traded my civic for it but I wanted my baby back :'( ) and that thing was REALLY hard to lug, I could let the clutch out and it barely lugged... Is the civic like this? I got ok at starting and my 1-2 shifts were a little choppy (talkin normal driving not trying to race the thing) I think I was letting the clutch out too fast cuz it did the fluctuating thing right after I let it out, if you understand me... Its hard to describe unless you know why it does it, which i think is cuz i let it out too fast... I dunno though...
ok long post... Is the civic like that or is it a nice easy stick?

To learn standard I mainly practiced on hills, that's when I was 16. I'll be 25 this year buddy. Keep practicing and it WILL become second nature.
