SPOON Engine?
After talking to a guy at this shop by my town where i live he proposed two options to me and i was wondering what would be the best option..you opinion is greatly appriciated.
Option 1 was to do a factory rebuild on my b16a2 in my 2000 SI for 4000 with labor parts everything including pulling it out and putting it in
option 2 was he has a SPOON Crate Engine in his shop with 20XXX miles and wants 3800 for it
what do you guys think

Re: SPOON Engine?
omgosh..stay away from that guy.
whats wrong with your motor now?...besides it being a B16?
you want more power. you want lower miles? go to www.hmotorsonline.com or www.tigerjapense.com
no such thing as a spoon crate motor for 3800. spoon makes motors but they are v8s and v10s for formula cars

Re: SPOON Engine?
^true, i guess that almost a deal, but is that still a b16 and would it still all be oem?
our question is..
are you wanting to be cool?
you want more power?
or do you want something newer?

Re: SPOON Engine?
If you can’t fix your motor yourself and don’t know of anyone to help you. I would still look for someone cheaper than that guy. Spoon motors are nice I have driven an ek hatch with one before it was a b18c and it was extremely smooth, but they better be for the price.

Re: SPOON Engine?
Really for the money the Spoon Engines arent bad in price. Only because its is a brand new motor! Never been used, go buy a motor from Honda that has 0 miles and never been used I bet its more than that and it wouldnt be balanced that precise. However I think it is a waste of money, if they raised the compression and did headwork yeah it would be nice but honsetly do you think a Spoon JDM B18C-R is going to outrun a regular JDM B18C-R? I think the differences would be so minimal it wouldnt be easy to tell which is which. Obviously the Spoon I would assume feels a little smoother but if it puts out the same HP? $3800 seems way too cheap for a genuine Spoon motor.

Re: SPOON Engine?
ok so from what i can tell a spoon engine doesnt have improved performance........its just balanced and blueprinted(which is just making tolerances tighter and more uniform)...........so i dont see the real advantage over a rebuilt engine in a street car.
honestly if it were me and i had the money for either of those options........id get a jdm b16 and swap it in.....for ALOT less. then you can build your engine on your own time.
thats my suggestion

Re: SPOON Engine?
What he said.
Anyway. For the money they want for said spoon engine you could just rebuild your stock motor with all OE parts, as thats all you would be getting in the Spoon motor, have a good machine shop blueprint and balance it for you. Now you have a ZERO miles engine with enough coin left to pick up a $400 ITR valve cover that has been painted yellow.

Meh, coming from a B20Z powered civic to a B16A powered one, i'd rather have the more powerful engine....way more fun to drive, and definitely faster!!!
The B16 from my EM1 is being yanked out very soon!
As far as the OP, Spoon engine is good, but a rip, go with a least a B18C, you won't be disappointed

Re: SPOON Engine?
Is there anything wrong with the engine you have now? Just curious.
Also, with regards to the spoon engine...if it doesn't idle like crap it isn't fast =p
I bet a smooth engine would barely be noticeable in a street car anyways; stick with a rebuild.

Re: SPOON Engine?
OP what is wrong with the B16 that you have now ? Have you done a comp/leak down test on it ? Going with a used JDM motor or that "Spoon" motor, you may end up getting a used engine that has lower miles but is in worse condition than what you have. At the moment I have a B16 with 159xxx on the clock, less than 1 lb variance between cyl. and less than 1% leak down on all cyl. Lower miles doesnt always = it is a healthy engine.
Who is to say that 80% of the 20,000 miles on that "Spoon" motor were not speant on a track having the sh@t beat out of it ?
