Speedometer turns on and off sometimes

Speedometer turns on and off sometimes
So I have a stock em1, had to replace the upper radiator hose and accidentally ripped the wiring for oil switch. Drove around without the switch for a day and the speedo starts acting up. Got the replacement adapter and solder back on and still acts up. No check engine light but could the wire being too long and touching the rad hose be the issue or do I need to resolder it better. Thank you.

Re: Speedometer turns on and off sometimes
It shouldn't have connection to that. The speed sensor is on top of the transmission in between where the axles go in, behind the engine.
First thing to do would be to look if the odometer keeps rolling when the speedometer falsely drops to zero. They come from the same sensor. If the odometer still works, sensor and wiring under the hood would be OK.

Re: Speedometer turns on and off sometimes
Ok so took a look with mechanic and everything looks fine. It drove fine as it didn't act up for him. No codes are being thrown, should I just buy a vss to be sure or what other issues should I look for.

Re: Speedometer turns on and off sometimes
I'm sorry, I'm not as fluent with Chassis codes. What year and trim is the EM1?
I ask as I have seen multiple problems with the speedo on the 92-95 civics including mine. Of which the fix was to swap the board on the back of the speedo, not the circuit paper on the back of the cluster but the actual speedo board.

Re: Speedometer turns on and off sometimes
I believe the 96-00 used the same basic gauge cluster setup just a different shape.
If you pull your gauge cluster and pull the speedometer out, you may find some issue with the board on the back of the speedo.
When re-assembling the cluster, do not over tighten the 3 screws holding the speedo in. I'm pretty sure it's the same 3 screw design as the previous generation.
If you google 92-00 civic speedo board swap you may find some good information.

Re: Speedometer turns on and off sometimes
If you don't see anything apparent on the speedo board I would probably begin tracing harness wires.
On the 92-95 the cruise control unit had it's own brain and if I recall used a green plug on the back of the cluster while the speedo/tach etc used the grey plugs.
I almost wonder if your dash ground is corroded or has a broken wire that makes intermittent contact.
If you have not already done so, I would search out the 96-00 Helm's manual. It's getting harder to find download links but if you find one, grab it, it will be your bible.

I would think you have larger electrical problems then just the board on the back of the speedo.

Re: Speedometer turns on and off sometimes
The 96-99 has a TSB for the engine wire harness, and you ripped the pressure sending wire so there could be additional wire damage as the harness is known to rub and short out in that area. Guess where the pressure sensor wire runs through?
I have attached the TSB for your awareness and I suspect all this goes hand in hand being this all started (as you say) when you ripped that wire.
TSB-x99-029e.pdf
It's not the most fun job to have to do but I suspect it's where your problem lies.

Not a stupid question.

Thank you again, going to look into the harness tomorrow morning.
