Speedometer not working, help me please!
Hi guys, i need help with my car. When I first bought my eg si, the speedometer didnt work. It jumps around from time to time but most of the time it stays not at 0 but under 0. All my gauges work like the temp, the fuel and the tachometer works perfect but my speedo doenst move for ****. I was wondering what could it be??
I borrowed one of speed sensors from work and tried it out but it didnt fit well and didnt work.
I heard that the plug for the speed sensor is supposed to put out a specific voltage?? what is that voltage suppose to be??
If my speed sensor plug is damaged ill just cut the plug off a car at the junk yard.

you could go to a junk yard and just get one out of another car.. any out of a 92-95 D series manual will work.. but have you tried another speedometer in your car yet??

Any '92 to 95 cluster will work, if you have a DX (no tach) cluster, consider this an 'opportunity' to upgrade to a tach. The odo and the speedo work off the same signal from the sending unit. If the ODO still works, then it is definitely the speedometer unit itself, which requires a cluster swap.

you could take a 1.5 cluster apart and put the speedometer over into your cluster... but i wasn't sure on the dc clusters... i know the 99-00 Si cluster's ppl are putting in there cars now...

Okay, if you have a CEL (check engine light) CHECK IT!!!
It could be the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) CEL.
But since you claim the odometer still works then that points to a faulty gauge. This is because the speedometer and odometer get the exact same signal from the VSS. Thus, if one functions and the other doesn't well, it not the mechanism sending the signal it's one the the two that receives the signal that is malfunctioning.
Here's and easy diagnosis and prescription:
If CEL is on, check the CEL FIRST!!
If the CEL pertains to the speedo sensor, ding ding ding, it's probably just the sensor located ontop of the transmission.
If CEL is NOT on....
Problem: The speedo doesn't work but the odometer works.
Solution: Replace the cluster or just replace the speedo gauge
Problem: The speedo doesn't work AND the odometer doesn't work.
Solution 1*: Bad Sensor - Replace the speedo sensor in the transmission.
*CEL should be on
Solution 2: Bad Gauge - Replace cluster or just replace the speedo gauge
IF Neither solution above fixed it.
Solution 3: Check all wiring from the sensor to the gauge. Because the signal is disrupted somewhere.
