Re: speedometer not working~!!!
a vss at a dealer or parts store is around 2-300.also a vss cel will not stay lit up.it will be off until you drive the car and then come to a stop then it usually kicks on solid until the next time you shut your car off.basicly check the plug, wires going into the plug and the bolts that mount it.pull it out and check the teeth on the gear and hope that it is the vss and not the gear in the trans it goes to.even if you vss looks good it could still be bad.there is a way to do a volt test on it in most manuals.i also have a vss ill sell if your interested just pm me

Re: speedometer not working~!!!
I have the VSS code 17 for my B16 in a 93 CX with what seems to be good wires. Speedometer works, is there a part number for the plug? Is it an Honda OEM part only or can I get the plug at say Autozone?

Re: speedometer not working~!!!
You'll need a B series VSS... I'm almost certain that D series is not compatible.
It is very common for the pins to corrode. When mine went the pins in the vss rusted out, and so did the socket in the connector. I had to replace them both. I had the same symptoms as you were: the speedometer worked fine, then it started jumping around a little... then it worked fine, then it died... then it started jumping. I didn't actually get a CEL until I'd gone through several days of that.
You don't have to buy one new. I got mine used on ebay for $14. Or you can junkyard one, probably from any B series Integra, Civic, or Del Sol. I'd recommend cutting off the connector and buying that too unless you're sure yours is good.
Then it's as simple as cutting off the old connector and soldering the new one on, then replacing the VSS. If the problem continues, then it's your cluster.

You can use a VSS from a d16y8, all you would have to do is swap out the gears which is really easy. I used the vss from my old d16 on my b16a2 2 weeks ago and my speedometer is working fine.
