Default Speedometer issues....

i just bought a hooptie,a 93 civic lx sedan auto as a daily, because my ej(recently painted)is getting all dinged and scratched.back to my problems, the speedometer was all over place when it did work and the check engine light was on,pulled the code #17 for VSS,so i changed the speed sensor.now it works and doesn't work.no more check engine light tough

my question is could it be the cluster? if i bang on the dash it will start working again, also sometimes the dash lights go out

has anyone had their cluster go bad on their eg's?

Corroded terminals in the VSS plug is a common problem.

I've had that issue after a tranny swap and clutch upgrade. It would go haywire. Your odometer won't turnover if the needle totally stops if your having the same prob. If it's not corrosion you can try cleaning the actual sensor. After I did that my speedo works all time now. Just a thought.

yes I noticed this, the odometer shows almost 162,000 miles...I dont know how long the car had VSS problems, soo that means it may have alot more miles on it right?

I haven't investigated it myself, because my VSS is somewhat loose in the transmission, but I've read that the gauge cluster may have some solder points that need to be reflowed and causes the same symptoms because contact is intermittent or just not good enough.

I had the same issue. finally one day when i was at the junkyard. I decided to pull out a speedometer from another civic. I brought it home and verified all the solder points were good. I just swapped out the board on the back of my speedometer and have never looked back. I have no more issues with my speedometer. It is worth a try. And the speddometer only cost me 5 bucks.
