Default speedometer issue

I did search, but did not find anything that directly answered my question

ok, if the VSS is damaged/not connected properly, would the RPM's still give an accurate reading? or would they follow in the footsteps of the speedometer...ie, all over the place

here's my situation...today I noticed this, I am driving to the bank, and my speedo stays at 30km/k when driving, no matter what speed, tach is fine...now here's teh thing, it bounces from 20-40-20-40-20-40...it seems to turn with the wheel, as in if my wheel is turning slow, just rollin, it moves at a fairly slow speed, the faster I Go, the faster it goes, to a point where it stays at 30...doesn't budge...as hard as it is to explain, if I am just coasting, barely rolling, it bounces from 20-40, then gets faster the faster I go to a point where it just sticks at 30km/h...does this while accelerating or deccelerating...

so when I first noticed it, I shut off the car, turned it back on, and the problem went away....on the drive back, same thing happened, and it's been happening periodicly...I tried turning off the car, it fixed it ... 40% of the time, the other 60% it did not make a difference...

this has me stumped, because from my understanding if it was the VSS, the tach would not display proper reading...but before I go out and purchase a new gauge cluster, I am hoping there are things I can try

if y'all think it's the VSS, please correct me, my knowledge is limited...very much so

Thanks,

yes your RPM's still would give off a acurate reading since RPM's are measure from your ignition. you got a bad connection somewhere in the VSS
