Default Speedometer gone rogue

I have a 95 civic coupe with a b16a swap and my speedo is malfunctioning,It works when and only when it wants to, appears to not care if is warmed up, just started, sometimes it works, sometimes it wont. Ill be going town the strret at 25, and it will jump up to 90 or so, than back down. Half the time it works as needed... other times it wont work at all, also when it stays at zero my odometer stops working. Im not that mechanical but my friends are any tips so i can tell them things to try

Is CEL code 17 thrown? If not, the cluster or speedometer is likely bad.

I have had this happen a few times, as a matter of fact it's happening right now to my '92 hatch with a B16A.

Before you go riping the gauge cluster out of the dash, just unplug the Speed Sensor (the only sensor located on top/back of the transmission) and check the connector and senor terminals for corrosion. It's almost alway green in color.

Go from there.

Click the CEL sticky at the top of this subforum (or in my signature) to learn how to recover OBD1 CEL codes.

Reset the ECU (see CEL sticky). The next time you are driving and the CEL turns on, pull over and leave the engine running while you jump the service connector. Do you get code 23 again or do you get code 17?

had this happen in my friends teg. it was happening for about 2 weeks before he spun a bearing and put a b20 in. when we were hooking everything back up, we cleaned the connector on the speed sensor (dragon fire ftw) and he hasn't had a problem. that was 2 years ago

I just had this happen as well. I thought it was the speed sensor, but even after replacing it, it was still doing the same thing. Luckily my brother in law has another Si, we swapped clusters and the problem followed. So, I bought a cheap DX cluster and swapped only the speed mechanism from it. Problem solved.
