Speedo Acting up please help!
I was on my way home from work today when my speedo started going crazy from 0-220 just jumping all over the place, then right after that the check engine light came on and the speedo just kept going back and forth?
Does anyone know what this is? I was thinking theres a loose wire somewhere or something?
Any input would be great. Thanks

I would imagine it's the speed sensor.. That would also throw the check engine light. Also a bad alternator could do that, but it's probably the vehicle speed sensor

Just changed the speed sensor.
Engine light is still on and the speedo flaps from 0-160. Also when its stuck at 160 my odometer keeps rolling...
Any other suggestions?

I never heard of an alternator causing such havok but I could be wrong. I do find it weird that you changed the VSS and it is still malfunctioning. Try to run a different cluster and see if it is still doing the same thing. If not there is something wrong with your original cluster. Check the connections on the back, meaning the circuits. See if any are broken. I had the same problem you did but with my tach and thats what it was. And I had it again but that was because my cluster was going bad.

I had same problem with a twitching jumpy nspeedo needle. After unplugging the VSS I believe it had shorted and i lost VTEC. After leaving it unplugged for several weeks i decided to plug it back in and it stared working normally without jumping around and i got VTEC back. Just a random suggestion if you've lost all hope.
Good luck on the fix

What code are you throwing? That will help us help you....
I had this problem once in my EJ1, and I let it go for months and it rolled about 40k in that time. With mine I just replaced the chip behind the speedo, I have a few here if you want to try that. I have 1 KmH and 2 MPH.

i had that same problem with my eg....change out speed sensor twice, cluster, brand new alternator and makes me think could it be the tranny itself?

well if its not the speed sensor its probably the battery or the alternator. My girlfriends car did the same thing.. except everything on her dash went haywire. turned out to be the alternator. All you need to do is check your voltage with the car running and double check all of your terminals and grounds. You could even go to autozone or advance and have one of their monkeys check it for you

I recently had the same problem on my 98 coupe. I changed the speed sensor, making sure to put some electric grease to keep water out. No problems since.

DOES VTEC ENGAGE?
if not.. Directly under neither your throttle body on top of the tranny there is a plug. check that its connected well and no wires are loose. You may want to unplug and check if rusty, lube. The plug this connects to this is your speed sensor... you lose VTEC when this is connector is unplugged.
If all this is good.
Speedo may be going out.
Borrow a friends and check.

Re: (Since94)
Its a 99 DX bone stock.
I'll get the code for you asap. Perhaps it can be the cluster... but I'll check everything else first.
