Hello guys. I was directed to post on here for my problem. I've been driving a 98 civic DX sedan for 5 years now with little to no problems. Today while driving my speedometer started going up and down drastically when I accelerated. Like 0-80 when I just tap it then it kinda flutters about and drops down to 0 after I let it idle. The check engine light came on as well. On top of all of this my car won't go past first gear or so it seems. I was told its probably a speed sensor on my transmission but I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated!

post the code. so when you hit(tap) the vss it works ?. check the plug(s) on the harness and the vss it's self for any loose wires/corrosion. if they are both find you may need a new vss which can be got at a pick n pull for 10-20$. but the vss going out would not cause the car tp not go past first as you say. is this an auto ?

It is an automatic transmission. I'm planning on getting the codes read tomorrow as it's a little late now.

Code is probably P500 or P501. Is D1 flashing too?

To start, I would pull off the VSS connector and see if either side is corroded.
