Default Spark Plug Shot out!!

Well last night when i was diving home from work i got about 1/2 mile and heard a horribly noise like my exhaust had fallen off. So i pulled over and popped my hood and my #4 spark plug and wire were dancing around. so i shut the car off and tried to put it back in did not work. Yadd yadda

What i want to know is what kinda damage could have been done. I started the car up fine, when it was on 3 cylinders. But when i put the 4th one in nothing. got fuel. I know my dizzy is shot now. but i was having a hard time putting the plug in. Do you think it striped the threads. If it did do i need a new head now or what?

same thing happened to my stock CX motor and my buddy's old school 318i. both times, we just put in a new spark plug and from what we can tell, no damage occurred.

yea but it seems as if the threads had somewhat stripped down in the head. it was a bitch to get the spark plug in. Do you think i need a new one or can a machine shop fix this?

since your sparky has shot out, most probably, the thread is shot. Other than that, no damage.

Now, you basically have 3 choices:

1. Go buy a helicoil kit and fix it yourself

2. Go to a automotive shop and have the mechanic fix it.

3. GO to a machine shop to reweld the hole and retap it.

i vote for number 1

A helicoil kit is composed of a tap and a sorta spring type coil. They are available in automotive parts store. What you do is that you retap the stipped hole, insert the coil and then screw in your spark plug. Look here it will give you an idea. http://www.roadstarmagazine.co...d=233

yeah thea same thing happen to my D16y8 head, but when I frist put the head on I put new plugs. and the #2 started to thighten it down it felt like it stripped, so I tried to back it out, and still the same ****. so I just got a bar and tighten the F*** just to make it go in. now that I blow a head gasket, I just swaped the head out for one that I had laying around. and when I took it to the shop they wanted 30bucks to tap it and put a threaded sleeve in it, cuz if you just tap it, it mite not hold. and then you would have the prob. of getting a bigger spark plug threads. so the best bet is to get it done right, don't just tap it with a tap and die set. good luck. and you have to take off the head to do this, so now would be a good time to do some head work, and mill it if your going all motor

helicoils do work in some situations. I don't know how they will work in this enviroment though. If it were my car, I would probably take the head off and take it to a good machine shop. They may weld it the retap it or they might plug it with something bigger and then redill and tap it. Some people don't like helicoils, some do.

I had the same thing happen to my car. Spark plug shot and caused a dent from the inside of my hood. My car started to rumble. The thread was stripped and i had to get it re-threaded.

So either fix the thread or grab a new head.
My car is running for a year now with no problems.

I see that you are not that confident here. Bring your car down to a auto shop. They will fix it for you... Much simpler

fs</TD></TR></TABLE> yea i could do that but i like doing things myself. also im not looking to spend 500 bucks to get my car running when i can spend half. I just got my license back and was only got to drive my car for 2 days. So im not that rich this week.

I bet it's the ignition coil. When the spark plug flew out the high side current didn't have anywhere to go damaging it. Take a look at it, it's inside the distributor. You might even be able to tell visually if its bad if it looks burned or see if autozone will test the entire distributor for you. After market coil will cost you around 50-80.
