This sounds like a dumb Idea
To pull my d16z6 out of my 95 honda civic, could I just unbolt the crankshaft and then unbolt it from the tranny then pull it up and out.

What are you talking about? You're making no sense whatsoever. What does the crankshaft have to do with pulling a motor?
And its easier to pull both at the same time, do not unbolt the trans from the motor.

really?? cuz i heard it's easier to unbolt the crankshaft if you flip the car upside down, unhook your e-brake cables, and pull the crankshaft out the bottom..

Absolutely, that method is easy as 1-2-3. Make sure to get atleast 4 tubes of hondabond from your local dealer. Once you place the crankshaft back in (it will need to slide in from the tranny side through the hole where the axle normally is, also make sure to use plenty of red assembly lube because you don't want a dry start.) you will need to apply a peanut butter type thickness coating of hondabond around the transmission mating surface where it meets the block. You should see a good bit squeeze out once you tighten all the bolts, the factory torque rating is 151 ft. lbs. Re-install your battery ground cable to a known good power source, turn the key and enjoy!
BTW here is what you need 4 tubes of.
Good luck and happy motoring!

Re: This sounds like a dumb Idea
Oh and question, are you wanting to replace the crank? or what is your main goal here? to remove the motor the easiest way is to unhook everything from the motor and trans. pull out the axle shafts. Hook up a cherry picker to the motor and transmission and unbolt it and just drop it down. Then just unbolt the motor and trans on the ground. take me about 5 hours to change a clutch by my self doing this, some slacking is included drinking beer, texting, lunch break, smoke breaks ect...

You have to a buy a carflipperjackthingamajig, sold exclusively by Honda. Oh, and you can only order it from Japan b/c that's how the Japanese work on their cars, they flip them upside down. Dont' forget the Hondabond!!!!!!!!!!

Re: This sounds like a dumb Idea
Straight answer: No, it would be much easier to drop the whole motor and trans out and replace your crank than trying just to get the engine out. You would have to drop the engine anyhow. You'd have to take the Timing covers off to loosen the Tensioner for the Timing belt to get it loose to take the Crank Pully off to get the crank even out. Might as well drop the whole engine + trans IMO. I wouldn't want to be stuck under there doing that, just my $0.02.
