I have a jdm d15b sohc vtec engine. My car died going down the road today and I attempted to restart it several times thereafter. I pop the hood, pull a spark plug and see if it's getting fire. It wasn't, so I opened the dizzy cap and the rotor button was almost broken off. I replaced it, tried to start it, and still no fire from the plugs. The cam gear was not being turned by the timing belt. The belt did not break, but it is loose, and can easily be slid off the cam gear if I were to try. I'm thinking maybe the tensioner failed. Basically, the crank is turning over, but the timing belt is slipping on the pulley near the crank and will not turn the camshaft. What are the chances that my repeated trying to start the car will have bent a valve with the camshaft not turning? When I turned it over the last time I attempted to start it, it sounded like there was little to no compression, as the started turned over very freely.

1. Buy new d15b for $650 shipped
2. Deal with crank pully, chance bent valves, or it might just be the tensioner failed and only require a new one and belt

Any and all advice is welcomed to help me resolve my issue on my daily driver.

Replace the Tensioner, buy a new head, call it a day!

why not do a compression check?

replace the head...you might get lucky.

x2 if u got good compression on all cylinders than you are a lucky SOB throw a new tensioner and belt on and drive it like you stole it..

I can't do a compression check because the camshaft will not turn when the motor is being turned over. I will have to replace the tensioner and belt and hope it's all good before even being able to see if the valves are bent.

Seth, what i would do if i were you is replace the timing belt, tensioner, and waterpump. after it's all back together to the point of being able to crank it over do a compression test. You may get lucky. If you were just trying to crank it over, chances are you could be ok, but if you were anywhere above i'd say 2500 rpm when your car died you might not be. If not, atleast you will already have a new timing belt and everything for your new motor.

i had my belt snap going about 10 mph around a corner in my old turbo civic 4dr with a d16z6

i put a new belt on started it up and had no problems at all

no bent valves for me so you could get lucky depending at what the rpms were at

i say the timing is off.. put her up in the air.. and check the tensioner and make sure nothing is stuck. rest the timing and try to fire it up. if not u might have bent valves..
if bent a few just send it off to the machine shop..

you stripped the belt by the crank. It happened to my car a few months back. Replace belt and you will be good to go. I promise seth, Have I ever let you down?

Yeah, the belt is definitely stripped down there, but will turning it over several times have messed up the valves? I can't get the stupid power steering bracket off to remove the timing belt and to put the new one on there.

Got it all put back together tonight, and it seemed like it was just timing belt failure. No bent valves, and all is running fine as of now.
