Default Some SOHC questions for the experts...

Ok, as some of you may or may not know.. I purchased a 93 Civic DX coupe auto for my brother for $1000.00.
The headgasket is blown, so I figured might as well swap a VTEC head on there.

So far, I got all this stuff ready to go..
99 EX head, ported and polished by Topspeed Performance
95 Civic EX intake manifold, match ported at the throttle for a B16 TB.
Three angle valve job, head resurfaced 15 thousandths.
95 Civic EX P28 automatic ECU.
AEM cam gear.

My questions...
I have access to a Bullfrog/Gude SOHCVTEC cam. Worth it? It's free if I want to use it. Do I need to upgrade my springs? Head is already apart so it's not a big deal if I have to.

What is my compression?
99 EX head milled 15 thou
93 DX block
99 EX metal headgasket

Any good cam gear setting? This is an automatic, so I am not gonna bother putting it on the dyno. It's also bone stock as far as intake/exhaust is concerned, and it will stay that way. I want quiet, stock reliability with just a tad more power because this DX is sorry.

Let me know. Thanks!

Why are you going to waste a p&p'ed head on a stock intake and exhaust!?!?!

Either way, You don't "need" to upgrade your springs but, it would be a decent idea, if you are looking for reliability.

check which model number the cam is. most manufacturers have cams that work with stock valvetrain while other ones require upgraded springs, etc.

That's what I'm thinking. An autoDX is going to be slow no matter how many parts you throw on the 1.5L motor. And the factory exhaust manifold is so restrictive, won't matter how much air/fuel is getting in.

A cam will show little to no benefit if you keep the current configuration.

if the bullfrog cam is a WILD CAM then youd need an aftermarket valvetrain, if its a street then youre cool.
as for the cam sprocket i wouldnt really touch the timing on it, unless you get it dyno tuned somewhere

Reasons for a ported head on stock system:

1- 99 EX head had 1 bent valve and it was free. All I paid for was 1 valve and a set of valve seals.
2- Topspeed's owner(Josh) owed me a favor for some labor I helped him with a while back. He suggested the head port(which he normally charges like $600.00 to do), so I said "sure, why not". Nobody around here ever messed with a SOHC motor and basically we're just doing it for kicks. It's nothing major. Kinda like a ITR port, but smoothed even further, and a nice *** valve job. SO I PAID ZERO DOLLARS FOR THE HEAD PORT.
3- Money. This is my brother's car. I do enough for him as is, and he doesn't feel like buying any other parts for it. Neither do I.

Bottom line is, this car is an experiment. If it runs good, awesome. If it doesn't, oh well. If it runs like ****, I'll resurface the DX head and put it back to stock.

So does anyone have any idea what kind of compression I am looking at?
89 octane or 93 octane. That's the question.

If your really gonna do all that work to the car I would put a manuel tranny because tha auto tranny is a pile. IMHO. At least if you swap to manuel you'll get more power to the ground.
