Default SOHC VTEC.. Can't tell if its working

I can't feel any difference in my civic when vtec is supposed to be crossing over. I read somewhere in another thread that in the d16z6 you couldnt really feel anything, or really even hear anything for that matter. Is this true? The only thing i get is that my intake whistles up to about 5,000 rpm and then it stops. Could that be it? Thanks

on my d16y8 with a short ram i can definitely tell when vtec kicks in, at 5500 there's a big sound difference.

actually on d16y8's vtec kicks in at 5,700 and it sounds like a rumble or growl but im not sure when it kicks in on z6's. I did a mini me on my LX sedan but i was dissappointed cause it runs just as fast as my old Y7 head, the only diffrence is it kicks vtec in but that doesnt even last long enough to make a difference so im getting a zex stage 2 cam and aem gear to see what it'll do.

I don't feel any crossover in my car at all. Same engine as yours. It's not like it's some huge kick, it's working just fine.

Yep Yep

After i put a ram air on my 96 ex, and stomp it, i felt and heared the vtec.
Its not like it throws you back in the seat or anything, but you can tell the difference.

with my AEM short-ram, I could definitely hear VTEC on my '97 EX. i also felt a little "kick," and by little I mean little. the engine got twice as loud but still went nowhere. but yeah, with a stock airbox, I couldn't hear it at all.

On my 97 ex coupe, i had a short ram on it, and it wasn't very distinguished, in sound. It was my first Honda, so i thought it sounded great. It had the deep sound, you know that sound, dddwwwwaaahhhh.

But on my 94 si hatch, a d16z, with a short ram, it screamed Bloody Murder, it was fukn loud as hell, and i also noticed all the 92-95 ex's and si's, all had a whistling sound from the intake. You rev it up slightly, like from idle to 3,000rpm, and when you let off, it whistles...Where my 97 ex, never did that, nore was it as loud?

The i/manifolds on 96-00 are short and fat, whereas on 92-95 ex,si, there long and skinny...Wait a minute, that sounds sick...Well you know what i mean. I like the feel and sound of the d16z better, it sounded stronger.

The d16z6 has a VTEC crossover at 5200rpm. I have a ghetto CAI on my sol and i can hear the difference but cant really feel ****. Although sometimes i like to think that i can. NEwayz, ya its not a big difference but its prolly working fine.

I don't recommend it, but on a cold morning after it's been sitting all night, start your car and immediately start driving hard to redline. When the oil is up to temp you may feel a little kick.

and what would that show? vtec doesn't kick in when the engine's too cold.

Read the last sentence. When the oil is up to temp...meaning that while you are in the upper rev range you will feel VTEC engage when the oil pressure/temp is in normal operating range.

No, the stock D16Z6 engagement point is 4800RPM.

This is off the topic a little bit, but the guys with the d16z6 in coupes.. can you chirp your tires on the 1-2 shift? I can almost never do it unless its wet or sand. I didnt include hatches because i figured they can do it easier with less weight

I was able to do that during a left hand turn....the tires broke loose during the 1-2 shift.

I have seen dyno graphs of a 2000 and 1998 D16Y8 in a coupe, both had different VTEC engagement points. I think it just depends on the engine and oil pressure as well. One was at 5200 rpm, and the other was at 5500 rpm. Also, if you go by the rpm on the gauge in the stock instrument cluster, subtract a couple hundred rpm off of it. The gauge is about 300-400 rpm off the actual reading at redline.
