SOHC turbo? or B series swap?
i did a search but nothing really came up that was like this... either turbo, or swap. not both....
but heres the deal... im suppose to get at least 2700 settlement from insurance after theives stole my car. Well, ive got a DX coupe. (please dont point and laugh) but its stock now and running with about 180K to my guess....
Question: should i swap in a low mile D16z6 and go turbo? or buy a DOHC Vtec swap.
im guessing a built SOHC turbo system including engine will cost me about as much as the B series.
Possibly thinking about LS/Vtec in the future, but i dont know if i can handle the wiring of just a B16 yet.. need to search a little more.
guys? help....

you could have problems with the ls/vtec which might come out to cost you a good bit, sooo... i say go with a b18c1 but thats what i would do do what u want to do

I would definitely opt to turbo the d16. So many people are dropping big bucks to swap in a dohc vtec and they arent all happy with it. You can find a d16z6 for around 500 bucks and then a good turbo kit like a greddy will run you another 1500 and you will be smoking the guys who just dropped 2600 on a b16a2 swap.
I love the sohc motors anyways and would never ever be persuaded to drop in a dohc. My plans are to turbo my d16 and spray at the tracks. I plan on running in the low 13's to high 12's.
I just cant justify spending 2600 bucks on a b series swap just to get beat by my buddys sohc turbo pushing 275 hp and running 12.8 i the quarter. Oh ya, he only spent about 2000 bucks to get it there too.

drive a civic with a b18c, go ahead throw the bolts on for too, then drive my sohc d16 with 6psi greddy kit. Which one is faster and more ENJOYABLE to drive-not to mention sounds cooler- guess what, its the SOHC

Your forgetting tons of key items.
1) Gotta have someone swap it for you ($$$)
2) Don't forget about that $500 clutch you'll need for that turbo...
3) Fuel upgrades anyone? SAFC + some pumps and rails and injectors = more $$$
It's not as easy as adding the obvios numbers up for a total cost. The fact is a turbo SOHC swap WILL end up costing more than a B16A.
Don't forget about driveability/relibility issues with the turbo. Expect warming up your car much more with a turbo, don't forget about all the **** you'll need to replace within a few thousand miles. Turbo is definitly not as "streetable" as a B16A.
Either way man. Turbo rules, no question about it. B16A = damn fun and more reliable.

He could have posted the part about the money for the swap only because you stated that you didnt think you were up to wiring the B16. Good call though on labor yourself!!! I gotsa turbo waiting in my basement right now for my little SOHC

go b series, i did and i'm very happy with it. nothing like revving to 8 and feeling the car pull in the top end.

whats wrong with the z6? It had lots of aftermarket support and is a very reliable engine. There is just as much stuff to do to the z6 as there is a b series.
i really admire anyone who puts work and gets good times on their sohc, go for it! personally i would go for the swap cuz i don't want boost in my car, but thats just my opinion.

Re: SOHC turbo? or B series swap? (VTi hatch)
gotta love the sohc turbo man...its really quick and its pretty much good for what most people are looking for. BUT...if you did swap, i'd go with a clean gsr swap and then you'll be happy too. then turbo the sucker later.
i wouldn't try and do the ls/vtec motor though...nothing but problems have been hapenning to almost evryone i talk to that has that. they work awesome for a time...then just die for some reason. there's prolly exceptions but this is just what i hear most often.

Seriously, if $2700 is all you have to work with, you're probably gonna come up a little short in the D16-turbo dept., but then again, the avg. B18C1 swap is around $3k for everything not including swap labor, so it's kinda 50/50.
Asuming you find a used D16 in good shape with relativley low miles (under 60k lets say) for $3-500, then you've got $2200 worth of turbo to play with. People sell GReddy SOHC kits for anywhere from $800-1300 (used) including BOV's, FMIC's and in some cases fuel upgraded too. Either way, a $250 AFC, $100 intank 255lph pump, $50-75 DSM 450's and $30 resistor pack, $20 clips... you're looking at less than $500 in fuel. The rest goes to gauges, boost controllers, timers etc...
However, there should be a little disclaimer for every boost thread that reads something like:
*Caution- Turbocharging is A- very addictive, and B- very costly once you decide to upgrade.
There are other points to it too, but I'll leave those out there for now.

Re: SOHC turbo? or B series swap? (VTC_boost-less_CiViC)
It all depends what you want right now.....if you just want to be fast now, then go with the SOHC Turbo....If you have life long plans with your car like me, then go with the DOHC swap and plan to turbo that later on.....
Either way, I think you'll be happy with your decision. My bro has a turbo SOHC and it sure is fun to drive.....but I have fun driving my B18C5 Sol as well......

Re: SOHC turbo? or B series swap? (allmtrSI)
for long term efficiency go with the B18c. People forget that you really want to buy aftermarket fuel and ignition part's when going turbo, where as with the B18c it's a simple swap, and you don't have to worry as much about maintnence nearly as much. The B18c with a few slight mod's will walk all over a Z6 turbo, especially a z6 with turbo kit vs. a B18c, winner will be B18c for the most part.

i would keep the sohc and turbo it , swap it yourself, its easy. I have 8.5psi to my sohc and it hauls... swap that bitch, you can run twelves with a turbo sohc.

how fast do you want to go is the qestion if you want low times it will cost a hell of a lot more to go with the sohc i guess what im saying is that in the longrun you will spend less on a dohc to make it go fast.

I was at the same question myself. I am going with the B16A 2nd gen and pulling my D16Z6. I found the engine and the install for 2500 canadain. Turns out that turboing the SOHC costs alot more than the swap.

Id vote D series turbo.
1. If you build a b series and blow it up....youre pretty much looking at another swap and a loss of any internals youve invested in (stock b series are not that fast).
2. If you blow up a d series you can buy another for 300 and swap it in a day.
Ive done an LS swap...spent 2800 when it was all said and done...and I was far from impressed. Granted Its fun...but its just as quick as my sohc zc with i/h/e, light fly, lsd and bored tb. ..but its a ton heavier..and throws the weight balance off.
