Smog help, high NO level
I am not new, I am just lazy to create my own account, been using my friend's for a while.
Anyways, I failed Smog at CA State Referee. I failed because of 2 things, Ignition Timing was off, set at 17degrees and Failed NO(ppm) level
I have a 1998 Honda Civic Ex d16y8
The only thing on the car right now is a Greddy Header
(The car was turboed) for about 3000 miles before I got a Referee Ticket, so everything was pulled out and put back to OEM, except for the Headers
Here are also the tested that was perform 4 months earlier, before I had turbo.

Here are the test results at the state referee

My Question is, what is the Factory Timing setting?, I set my from 17 to 14, i believe the referee said that it has to be 12-14.
I also changed both my O2 sensors, the one on the header and the cat. I put new NGK Plugs in
Will all these help me pass?
One last question, what does it mean when they put
Functional Check: Failed -- What does that apply to?

well some cars like mine have a cat on the header. i dont know if your car does. but probably just borrow someones cat/piping and pass it and return it. or buy a new one watever floats ur boat

My cat is after the header. The thing is, my next test is friday, I don't really have time to get another cat, I was wondering if it will help since I changed spark plug, set the timing back, and put new O2 sensors on. Since It failed by a little in NO by 100ppm or so.

Which Part of the test did you fail on?
For some more info
My primary o2 sensor was pretty clogged up, I guessed from running rich
and I was running the colder plugs during the test, which i tooked out, they look pretty dirty too from carbon deposit
So I don't really know if it would help since I put brand new o2 and spark plugs in.

its the ignition timing. everything else looks good. set it 2 degrees retard from what the spec is. state referee gives you +/- 2 degrees. you have your ignition advanced and advanced ignition causes higher NOx. just retard the timing

Is 14 degree good? Thats what I have it set on right now
BTW, I passed at 17degree in the first test, since regular smog test didnt check timing.
Does anyone know what is the factory spec?

Any help? I also used seafoam to clean out the carbon deposit in my engine. I'm hoping that after putting new O2 sensors, spark plugs, setting the timing back will help me lower NOx level just enough to pass? Any comments or suggestions? I'm trying to avoid getting a new cat right now, since it seems that I failed by a little over 100ppm in 15mph.
I also heard that running lower octane gas will help burn hotter, so is that true it will help when I smog? I was running 91 octane when I failed.

It was the NOx portion of the test that I also failed, I think my timing was about 13 degrees, I have also heard that running lower ocatne helps, easier for the engine to burn or something.

I'm hoping that I will be able to lower the NOx level just enough. I realized that my first test, I ran higher octane and was using colder plugs that was kind of carbonized too with a clogged up primary O2 sensor.

I PASSED
I set my timing to 14 degrees, new plugs and o2 sensors, and ran 87 octane.
HC was right on the max, so bearly passed, but anyways still passed.
