Default Small metal piece broken in half under valve cover.

Hey guys I couldn't get a good picture of what i'm talking about, but I have a d16Z6 and I noticed there is a little metal piece shaped sort-of like a U and it keeps the metal arm thingy from moving side to side. (when I say arm I'm talking about the thing that extends over the valve spring.... The piece broke and the arm moves side to side if I push it around but the car runs fine... HOWEVER, the piece is still being held on. I know this is a real stupid description of my problem, but to show you what piece it is I found a picture that miiight be able to help.

Do you guys see the springs that are going from left to right between the metal arm thingys? It seems that this motor has those springs in place of the metal pieces that my motor uses. Anyone know what it is and what problems it will cause me?

ah, nah sorry. I have a single vtec. I couldn't find apicture of mine so I was just using the non-vtec motor as a reference to show you guys where the piece is that i'm talking about.

It looks as though that motor doesn't have the metal piece but instead it has springs going side to side. I know this is a shitty description, but if you find a close picture of a z6 head with the valve cover off that would be cool and I could just point it out for you.

okay i know a couple things.. The arm thing that i'm speaking of is the rocker arm. To the left of the rocker arm there is a thin metal piece that seems to space out each rocker arm and hold it in place. that is the piece that has broken. anyone know yet?

Yes, the y8, y7 and z6 heads all have different ways of holding the valvetrain together and the rocker arms in place. Just order a new one from http://www.hondaautomotivepart...y.jsp

Or hit up your local honda dealership. Or just go pull a z6 head of a junkyard car and scavenge your parts out of that.

cool... just wondering. what kind of problems does it create when that piece is broken? keep in mind that it hasn't broken to pieces but a one side broke off and its still hanging on.

The rocker arm *could* slip off to the side, no longer opening that valve. If its an intake valve, probably not a big deal, you wont get any ignition in that cylinder and will be running on 3 cylinders. If its on the exhaust valves, not sure what problems it would create, but you'd have fuel dumping into the cylinder head, it would ignite, then the exhaust valve would fail to open and all that burnt gas would stay in the chamber, and mix with the next fuel charge. Not sure what it would do, but I'm gonna guess it wouldnt be good.

This is something you'll probably want to fix fairly soon.

thanks for the help

Heh, I cant remember, is the z6 even a vtec head? I dont think it is. In that case the y8 parts are not going to fit in your z6 head, the rocker arm setups will be completely different. y8's have 16 rocker arms + 8 shorter middle rocker arms, they dont use any of those tension clips or springs on the rocker arm setup.

hmm.. the Z6 is a single vtec motor from a 92-95si and ex. but i opened up the y8 valve cover and it seemed to have the same piece... i duno. if the piece isn't too much then i might just go buy the piece myself.

Hmmm. So for example on the intake side (side of head w/ intake manifold) there are 2 longer rocker arms, and one short one in the middle for each cylinder? Is that what your z6 looks like?

I have a pic of my y8 head, but I just realized its w/ the valvetrain already pulled out of it. I'm no help.
