Re: sloppy gsr shifter in civic
Get a short shifter. The bushing in the stock shifter deteriorates over time and basically crumbles apart, making the shifter have lots of side to side slop from the play in what used to be the stock bushing. Most aftermarket shifters use bearings, which tend to work better and have a more direct feel.

Check the metal plate that sandwiches the ball of the shifter up against the upper piece of shift linkage. If the bolts are loose or this white thing that slips over the ball is worn badly, it could cause slop. I just checked and the white thing is called a "seat" and it's part number 54110-sh3-003. (got it and the parts invoice 5ft from me).

Re: sloppy gsr shifter in civic
I'm pretty sure you're problem is not at the shifter. Your problem is probably the end peice of the shift rod(the one with the pin). The piece right before it goes into your tranny that allows that rod to pivot right to left has a bushing that goes bad and gives extremely sloppy feel. I think a common cause for this is heating up that area to get the stupid roll pin out wich causes the bushings to melt. The only fix I'm aware of is to replace that rod.
