Default slight ticking/ tapping sound.. the problem?

I have a slight ticking/ tapping sound coming from the engine bay during cold starts. It's NOT the valves beacuse the ticking is not consistant. I'm considering detonation as the key source, but I would like someone elses veiw on the subject and possable fix for the issue.

My guess is: engine timing and or octane.

It's possible it detonation due to timing or octane, I thought detonation occurred more frequently under load though, 2nd or 3rd gear pulls.

What motor? Any mods? Timing advanced/retarded?

it's a D16Y7

CAI, MSD with Ext Coil, Jet Chipped ECU, header. Timing is retarded 1 or 2 degrees. I can't remeber witch setting it's currently on. ALLWAYS run premium gas..

they take the impact of the vtec lobes when vtec is not engaged. They are a bitch to replace, you have to remove the cam and rockers. If you can live with the ticking noise, your motor won't be hurt by them. Maybe a little wear on your vtec lobes

I could see that if I had Vtec.. but it's a Y7 head, not a Y8

it goes away when it warms up right??? its just like mine. that means that when you turn on your motor on a cold start no oil has gotten up there yet so it ticks. when it warms up and gets a chance to get oil up there it shuts up. now for the guy that has the ticking problem even when it warms up. that means that you have alittle valve lash buddy, and if you dont get it fixed then your valves may get kind of kinked alittle. take the valve cover off, get a 10mm box wrench, a flat head, and a feeler gauge. loosen the 10mm bolt and use put the feeler gauge in between the valve tip and the rocker to see when to tighten it. the flathead can be used to adjust the distance between the valve tip and the rocker. then tighten the 10mm bolt. not a very good description of how you do it but search and you shall find it. exhaust side is .9-.10 intake is .7-.9 i think.

see... i have ticking like this too...

when i start the car... theres a reallllllyyy loud ticking coming from the head... when the car warms up it gets quieter but it's still there...

i've had a valve adjustment and that didn't get rid of the noise

me and the mechanic listened to the head more with a microphone... it makes no ticking on the exhaust side of the head or the top of the head... but it makes the really loud ticking from the intake side...

the mechanic told me it could be two things... either its my injectors or the valvetrain needs re-seated on the intake side...

i have not played with timing at all... i run 89 octane only... its a basically 100% stock d16y8

i ruled out my injectors because its the same intake manifold and everything from my old d16y8 and it never made that sound... and when i switched motors the sound appears... so i just kinda figured it wasnt that because it was good before... (but not saying that it couldnt have happened during the swap or change)

well try something that would not cost you money to try first. (like readjusting your gap between number 8 and 15.) my guess is the gap is wrong. it is normal for it to tap when the motor is cold. it cant be the valve train.
