slight oil around shock and springs
My friends civic has stock suspension, but on one of the shocks, i noticed a slight oil residue around the shock boot and a little on the springs. Its not new oil, it seems its been there for a while since there is a lil bit of sand build up aroudn it also. It seems to ride okae, but is what I see an idication of a blown shock? Is there any way to tell 100% if its blown, without taking it off.

go cruise around and if the car has trouble settling after going over bumps then the shocks need to be replaced.

Fluid leaking is a good indication of a blown shock/strut. I dont personally know of a way to check the shock without taking it off the car. If the car is real bouncy thats a possibility of blown shock. hope that helps...if any

I would wipe off all of the oil and drive it around for a while. If more oil shows up then it's probably the shock going bad. If not, and as you mentioned the CV boot ripped, it's most likely from that.
You can usually tell when a shock is bad as it will be bouncier in that corner and it may also make a groaning noise when compressed.
