Default Skunk2 Short shifter installed

I just got my skunk2 short shifter installed and it feels great but I think the shop charged me way too high. I was going to do it myself but just didnt want to mess up or didnt want to get stuck during it. So i decided to let a shop that I usually go to do the work. They changed the short shifter and charged me about $124.55 just for the labor. Does that sound about right?

dude, it took me 15 minutes to install my shifter and bushings, and I had never done it before on any car ever. so if 15 minutes is worth $124.55 then yea it sounds right, but that is the exact reason I'm a DIY-er

took me about 15 min to swap mine....it's only 2 bolts....or is it 3....I forget. You figure the average shop charges $80/hr......that adds up to about $20 for labor......which is what I used to feed and beer myself through the process.

Based on my findings you got ripped the *** off.

Holy **** you got raped. There was a DIY thread on here yesterday on how to do this (with tons of pics), it took him an estimated 1 hour to do. And he took his time too, so even if it took them an hour.... you still got raped.

You should find out what they charge per hour for labor at there shop. And then never go there again.

Yes you overpaid for labor,...however if the peace of mind you get from having proffesionals do your work is worth it,.....more power to ya. I would suggest in the future though that you ask for suggestions BEFORE you go to a shop. I used to be just like you. I loved my car and I didnt want to screw anything up, so I let the pros do all of my work. When I started hanging out with guys that did work on their on cars, I started to realize that ITS NOT REALLY THAT COMPLICATED. Ive always had a good nack for things mechanical and I had tons of experience with small motors (quads, dirtbikes, go-karts)so I started doing my own work. What I realized is that if you want things done right, research it and DO IT YOURSELF

An hour of labor costs about $100 where I am. So yeah, it was pretty pricey, but so is any work done at a shop. Didn't you get a quote before they started?

Are you ******* serious?

All you needed to do was look at my How-To and you would have $125 more in the bank right now.

yeah, I second Deemeetree, if I had just done an extensive writeup, then somebody told me they had just blatently ignored it and spend over $100, I'd be pissed too.

DIY w00t.

I agree with everyone, but, I just did that on my car and it was a PITA, the bolts to the exhaust were rusted together. Ended up snapping them off on the cat side, then had to take a wiz wheel and hack the nut off on the header side. PITA for a job I thought was gonna take a couple of minutes. Still worth it not to pay a shop 100+ bucks.

Exhaust removal is not neccesary for a shifter install, it makes it easier yes, but not necassary. I did mine without touching the exhaust.

I didn't remove my exhaust, look at my write-up. All I did was remove it from the hangers so it won't bind when I push it to the side. Piece of pie.

Epbem1, promise yourself you'll always work on your car from now on. That 125 could have bought you a nice toolset to get you started. I hate it when I hear people being charged by shops.

With all being said.. realize it happened, there's nothing you can do about it, and you're going to be smarter the next time around. No biggie man.
