Single cam Vtec Trans Weird sound!?
Ok i have a d15B vtec with a ex trans on it. it started a couples months ago where it would start making a noise as i got a little higher in rpms but not all the time....sometimes it would start at 2500 rpm some times it wouldnt do it at all. Sometimes when i was getting on it i honestly thought it was like vtec was barley kickin in. now it seems to do it alot esp if im engine breaking. my car would be super quiet if the trans didnt do this. Does anyone have any idea? i pulled it out. i do have a non vtec trans in the garage and set them side by side and spun the shaft and you could hear it sounded a littler "rougher" than the non vtec ( because i orginally thought it was the throwout). but i dont know it drives fine no slipping no grinding i just want it to quiet down and dont want to ruin it even tho i do get on it and it grabs gears hard enough to chirp second easly. can anyone help or point me in the right direction? Thanks!

i dont know about the trans but the d15b if its jdm duel vtec im fairly sure the first stage kicks in at 2500 rpm that could be what ur hearin. it is a d series the vtec is fairly quiet/weak b/c vtec is only on the intake side due to the location of the spark plugs

Re: Single cam Vtec Trans Weird sound!?
the trans is a Y8 trans...and the head is a Y8 head. I got the dual vtec engine but only used the block. So i kept my standard single stage Vtec, and the tranny is jus a Vtec trans on SOHC theres only 2 variants of trans in OBD2. Vtec and Non

Are you sure there's only 2 different trans.. And there not different trans just different gearing. The 96 to 00 d series trans are known for eatting input shaft bearings

Re: Single cam Vtec Trans Weird sound!?
well 2 diff gearing set ups...y7 and y8 are diff but its my original trans out of a 98 EX. You can hear it bad when engine braking, cant really hear it while just cruising, but can also hear it if stopped and foot off the clutch. put your foot on the clutch it quiets on down release the clutch and there's alot of chatter. but like ive said before its not always doing it, alot of times yea but there are times it runs quiet not as much now as before tho

Like i said i changed the ThrowOut bearing because i thought that was it from the sound. I guess ill pull it again and do the input shaft bearing, i wanna change all the seals anyways. Thanks for the help! hopefully this will solve my problem.

It kinda sounds like a slapping when it's idling . When I'm accelerating it kinda like a loud noise nd gets louder as the rpms get higher. It gets real bad Whien I'm engine braking or just letting off the gas and coasting in gear. If its at high rpms and Not applying gas it almost sounds like a manual transmission in reverse just 100 times louder and deeper sound but constant all the way down to idle or if I press in the clutch it goes away.
