well, your post is pretty vague. What are your goals? Sure, turbo sohc is great, especially if you piece it together cheaply yourself, but has your motor been beat down or has a lot of miles on it?

Do you take the car to the track at all?

Would you prefer more low-end or high-end power? Read up in the Forced Induction section. The first few threads at the top have A TON of info in them.

You could also look on http://www.craigslist.org and look for a B18B1 motor. they're really cheap, and would also be a good candidate for boost.

Turbo is nice, but you must remember to keep the fluids good and be nice to em.

boost in CA is going to be well over 2k to pass BAR.

My advice would to be to sit down and plan/think out what you really want to do with your car. If you have anything less than a D16z6 in your car I wouldnt even touch it, just a waste of money. I may have a complete SOHC for sale in a month or so and possibly an extra B18b1 that would be perfect for a turbo build.

When the time comes and you figure out what you want to do and have the money for it... PM Luserkid and he can help you with whatever you need

you can piece together your own kit for $1000-1500 if you can find deals. then you're gonna need a fuel system, another $100-200. then engine management, $100-300. then tune it, $500-600.

$500 to turbo your car will not be fast or reliable

You friend may be able to turbo you car for 500, but I would question the quality of the turbo, the condition that its in and how long it will take before you get rolled by the cops and sent BAR ref. That alone would turn me away from picking up an ebay or 500 "friend provided" turbo kit.

I myself would pick up a B18b1, which can be BAR'd fairly easily and DD the **** out of it until I saved up enough money to go turbo.
