hello,

i recently purchased a 97 ex manual transmission. i went ahead and performed a full tune up, regardless of what the previous owner had said. the cars runs excellent and there are no signs of any problems. however i did not change or ask about the transmission fluid. the car has 160000kms on it and the gears shift smoothly. I would just like to know when and if there are signs to be aware of, that dictate a tranny fluid n filter change.

I would do it just to be on the safe side. Fairly cheap too. Oh and there is no such thing as a filter on a manual transmission.

its getting changed Thursday.thanks to this kick *** forum i can do it myself but its so cold out, so i feel like spending the 80 bucks to get it done. would u happen to know the signs that a transmission fluid change would be necessary? just for future reference.

The transmission would be harder to shift, but there is no real way of knowing how bad it is by feeling. Usually when you notice noise or hard shifting the damage is done. The best way is to take out the fill plug and inspect fluid condition.

i know its cold here in canada, but it's easier to do than an oil change, so you wouldn't be spending much time outside. takes maybe 10 mins and is super easy if you've got a funnel. i splurged and got some of the GM synchromesh stuff (20$ a bottle and used 2 i think) but if you get some of the cheaper stuff, you can save about 60$..that's if it really costs 80$ to have it done!! up to you..

Ya winter sucks here, but being overcharged by a garage sucks even more! I would do it myself if I had to.

And I don't think it's necessary to change the tranny fluid under 200,000km. but I could be wrong.

Yeah 2 quarts (you need 1.9) from Honda costs about $11. If it were me, I may wait until it's warmer then do it to save cash, but I'm pretty cheap. I just changed mine for the first time ever at about 150,000 MILES (more than 160,000 km) and it never had an issue. It's also a 1997.

change it. GM syncromesh friction modified, my GSR took a little more than 2 quarts. D series may be less.

well after reading all of the posts, and i thank u for your time in responding, i went and decided to perform a oil check to determine my decision. i jacked up the car, "it was cold a F***" and loosened the fill hole. A particle free, translucent brown poured out. It seems that the transmission fluid is fine. i also check the fluid on top just below the gray transmission cap, and it to was the same. i feel that it doesnt need replacing at this time, because if there were any particles or debris it would of settled. the oil looked very clean.

This DOES really remind me to change my own fluid, too.... during the engine swap this summer I guess. I doubt mine is a clear brown, I'll tell you that much.
