1993 Civic Si, 3rd gear was grinding at 170,000 miles. I bought a tranny from a junkyard and am in the process of installing it. Everything in the drivetrain is stock except for the tranny. The junkyard claims it is from a 1995 EX, but I have not ruled out the possibility that they lied. When I tried to get the axles into the transmission, they wouldnt fit. I looked into the diff and it looks like some of the splines simply aren' there. The transmission says S20, just like the one I took out of my civic. I may be wrong, but I thought that all the D-series transmissions and axles had the same spline count. I have not had a chance to count the splines in the differential case yet, but I will do that as soon as I get home tonight. Any help would be appreciated.

Do the splines line up and the axle just isn't seating?

If so, here's a tip...

Line the splines of the axle up in the tranny and put it in as far as you can. Get a 18" long or so piece of 2x4. Let the hub side of the axle lay down a little and put the 2x4 against the tranny side CV joint. Using a hammer and the 2x4 like a nail and hit the axle into place. The sharp hits will usually seat it in 1-2 blows.

The 2x4 won't bust the CV boot.

add some grease and then center the ring. the grease will prevent ring from sliding to the bottom all the time and will help in maing it bit more slippery. ALWAYS WORKS 4 ME!

I lubed the hell out of the splines, and I have always used the 2x4 technique of persuading the half shaft into the tranny. I counted the splines, there are 24 on the axle, and 21 in the diff. But it should still line up. There are 7 splines, a space where a spline should go, then 7 splines, etc... I'm just going to take a file to the end of the axle and clean it up a bit to help get it into tranny. I just wanted to make sure I didn't get the wrong transmission. Thanks for the help guys, any more info is still appreciated.

if the axle is not going in make sure that little ring on the end of the axle is tight and snug against the axle, i have had many a time trying to get an axle in their and the little metal ring is loose

are you using grease or something else to lube? The great thing with grease is you can center the ring and the grease will prevent it from moving around after that. You can then put axle in as much as you can w/o any force and after that one quick jerk and it should be in. What I use as a jerk is I take off the bottom ball joint and tie rod then I lift the knuckle up a bit so not damaging the ball joint and quickly give it one hard pound and the axle is in.
