Default Should the thought of theft deter me from a Civic?

Hey guys. Im in need of a new car. My Buick Regal LS was wrecked and I was left with a nice lump of money in return for my very large inconvenience. The buick had to go anyways. Maybe in another 50 years, heh.

Anywho, Im looking at a 2000 Civic Si Coupe
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/...dptop
Hope that link works. Really long.

Regardless, a friend told me civics from 2000 and earlier are pretty favorable items for theft. Have any of you guys had any experience with this?

Should this deter me from this car? Also, my friend thinks that car is severely underpriced. Any reason for that?

I should say that Im looking at Civic and Accord coupes as a replacement. They need to be manual, and civic coupes, so far, have been easier to find as manual.

Thanks for all and any help.

If you want to avoid theft, don't get ANY 6th gen coupe in EBP or badged as an Si.

If you debadge a milano or FBP si to make it look as little like an si as possible, you'll be a lot better off.

IMO, i'd rather buy a 99-00 coupe and spend what I saved on the motor. You'll get a faster car for that money, with all the same options.

Ex for $5000 less, + nice swap = Better than Em1/si

I personally would go for an early model, like the EJ8s (people call those cars EKs) 6th gen, or the newest line-up, the 2006 civic.. IMO, I wouldn't buy an Si, as they are over-priced and usually ripped on. If you find one for real low price, there's a reason for it, steer clear! Take your time though choosing your car; and to answer the theft question, simply put: no.

99-00 EJ8 FTW! You can always find SI rims for 350 w/ tires and put the SI lip on etc and still save yourself a few grand.

How much modifying, if any, are you planning on doing? In any case, keep it simple and not flashy And with good security. Also, depending whree you live, park in "smart" places, meaning try not to park in obvious places in malls etc.

Im not looking for alot of speed, because I simply cant.

I want something that runs well stock. The fact being that Im just a college student with no income right now. Im not experienced with doing work on engines, and from what I hear (and I guess it kinda makes sense) you lose alot of reliability when you start doing work.

Thats why I was looking at the SI. Its a better package than the EX and LX, correct?

Also, I AM looking at Accord EX coupes, but its been a real bitch to find a low mileage yet MT car. I have found one for 7995 with 125k miles though.

Also, what do you guys think of the specific car I linked? Is the price right? Also Ill look at that EJ8 that you guys mentioned. Never really heard of it though.

And holy cow at the number of responses Ive already gotten...

Thanks so much

Well, I mean I dont have many options that I know of. (I should mention Im getting 10k from the insurance co.)

Since I dont have an income, my dad pays for my insurance, so he's basically telling me what I can and cannot drive (for the most part).

I cant look at things like the 240sx, etc etc that would drive up the insurance rate.

Are Accords really that much faster?

Yes, I understand I cant hit the streets racing with a stock civic but I can still find a sporty ride with a Civic, with some slight mods to the suspension and stuff, right?

I initially looked at Accord Ex' but those have been a bitch and a half to find in MT.

Edit: Is there another name for the EJ8? Im not finding anything.

No.....Just dont be an idiot and dump 5k into it without upgrading the security like most others......

A fuel cutoff switch is the fastest, cheapest, most efective way to do a quick security upgrade the day you buy the car....Hide the ****** really good and you'll be good to go.

i go to college in houston and live there sometimes... other times my appartment is just chillin lol but unlike cali civic theft isn't a big problem in houston... the crackheads tend to go for the beamers and lexus and whatnot i hardly ever hear of civics getting stolen even em1's... i'd go for it and get a good paging alarm and be done... i have a viper 2 way paging alarm works great...

thats my .02

Thanks again.

Seems easy enough to add a fuel cut off switch, heh.

Edit:

Just out of curiousity, if my original (note original..) intention is to do very little work to my car, should I look at Accords over Civics? I mean, I may do some in the future perhaps, but for right now, outside of a better suspension, I cant think of much that Id do.

^^ The civic will be more fun to drive and get better gas mileage, and likely cheaper to insure.

Why? Because you want to blow more $$ on a civic than you should just because it's gotta sick DOHC b16 mad tight vtec motor?

Think again.

dont let theft deter you...if you dont have a good security system...you'd go nuts every minute thinking about whats happening to your car...

i'd just go with a civic coupe...si or ex. Either one will serve your purposes. if i were you, i wouldn't go with an accord.higher insurance, not as much room for upgrade, etc. And as far as working on cars yourself, well, search, read, and learn. Don't let what other ppl say bout becoming less reliable worry you too much. Sure if you do things only recklessly, sure, it won't be great. But i undertand your concern.

if i had my crack at a 2000 si with 50k id go for it. their nice cars, good motor, all options and if u arent modn it big time it most likely wouldnt be viewed as a must steal car. just my 2 cents

An Si is more likely to get stolen than lower Civic trims.

If you don't care about how fast it is, but you want a fully loaded car, look into a Civic EX. They come in coupe and sedan for all the years from 1996 to 2000. It's basically the same as an Si, but missing some of the show mods such as the different grille, painted sideskirts and Si wheels. It also has a more economical SOHC VTEC engine instead of the Si coupe's DOHC VTEC and the EX doesn't have rear disk brakes (which is more of a looks thing than a performance thing). EXes are also cheaper to insure than an Si.

this thing is a pieace of ****

cold air intake(really a short ram), dual exhaust, tint, wannabe jdm sidemarkers, it has a 96-98 front end(either he totaled it and got a 96-98 frontend for cheap or he sold the 99-00 front end for a profit then got rid of his si, or tried to make it an inconspicuous car with the black and debadged si) , non-oem gauge cluster, heat sheield removed meaning at one point it had a header, blue wire loom, valve cover breather on the intake, and valve cover hose not hooked up

you're going to have problems with smog, no carb sticker on that short ram intake, vacumn lines not hooked up well, dual exhaust on a orignal 4 cyl exhaust

means it was molested

cd player was removed and is missing the garnish

id skip this one
