Should i get my head Ported and Polished??
hey i have a b18b that is going to have a fully built head, and boosting 12lbs on. I was wondering about porting it..
Im taking automotive classes and i asked my teacher about it, he highly DOESNT recommend it.. he says its too risky.
on the OTHER hand.. my friends tell me that the LS heads are much more restrictive than the vtec heads and that porting it will make a big difference.
so what do you guys think.
(and by the way, i can get a mild port and polish for $150 and a case of beer)

the b18b cylinder head has one tiny little flaw: NO VTAK!
you could port and polish a vtec head from a b-series and then slap it on to your b18b block and you got vtec AND a boost-friendly bottom end! >:D

that'll tell you how to do an ls/vtec

Maybe your teacher says not to do it, because he thinks you're going to get it done from someone who will do a generic job on it. Generic job meaning, porting and polishing the crap out of it without any regard for the car's intended purpose.

I started this build with a blank canvas, i got my eg for dirt cheap cause the d15 had horrible piston rings. I thought about doing a built all motor vtec, i thought about ls/vtec, ls turbo and b20 turbo. Then I got a killer deal on an ls swap so i just decided to go ls turbo. Im not trying to bench-race or anything but when im done i should make around 400whp, which is more than enough for me.

plus turning a car with boost and vtec is a bitch.
I would port and polish the ls head and drop a big camshaft that is meant for turbo.

ok first of all, most of you sound completely ignorant in this thread. don't speak unless you have something worth saying.
second, if you're going to build the bottom end of an ls, keep it non-vtec, and turbo it, that's great it's been done many times with success. I could point you in the direction of many builds on this forum that have made great numbers.
third, porting an ls head is not a bad idea at all you just have to have the right person with the right tools to do it. It is true that the flow characteristics are much worse on a non-vtec head than a vtec head, which is the reason why vtec heads for all technical purposes are superior. However, this being said there is still hope for the pr4 head. With the right cams, and like I said a shop with experience to port that head it can flow some pretty good numbers.
Good luck, do some research, and don't listen to half the knuckle heads on here, they're just trying to get their post count up.

if your on a budget and you want to keep the b18b head, i would suggest doing it yourself first i mean read up on it what not, and then when your done take to a well know guy in your area and have him take a look at it and ask if there is anything he would do. its not that hard everyone get so freaked out by doing it but if you just open it up a little bit you should be golden, but i cant stress enough RESEARCH FIRST befor you start porting

Cams are the only thing i dont have for my head at the moment, but i plan to get them with the next paycheck.
So far for the head i have Supertech dual valve springs, Supertech Titanium retainers, Supertech black nitride valves, KMS bronze valve guides and Supertech valve stem seals.
(edit) Im thinking Crower stage 2 cams.

its best to keep it non vtec and boost it.

do whatever you want. You can boost a non-VTEC with no problems, but you will make better numbers with a VTEC head as many people have said, they flow alot better. You could just leave the head stock for now and get a VTEC head and have the work done on that one.

the thread topic is NOT "should i get a vtec head or keep the ls head"
Thank you for the input and advice but like i said for this build i am doing LSturbo.. There will be more builds to come, the next one will most likely be a vtec build.
