Default Shock went through hood...still good to use?

Well I've always heard about it happening but now I've become a statistic ...I was changing my oil today and saw the shock piston out past the usual....so far it made a hole on the bottom side of my hood...at least it didn't go through...question is...if i fix this...is the shock still good to use...or should I just get another one? Thanks!

UPDATE: I took the shock out and this is what I found

it looks as though something wasnt installed correctly. it should be good to use still.

if the rod isn't scratched (which could ruin the seal on the shock), it should be fine to re-use

It looks like there could be some scoring on the rod (it may be grease or something), and if so, junk it.
