I was dropping a friend off at his house a couple of nights ago and the car wasn't moving or on. The parking brake was on and i left the car in 1st gear. He was getting out and forgot something so i leaned over to the passenger side to give it to him and i bumped the shifter and it came out of first into neutral. The clutch was still engaged. Withouth thinking i put it back into gear without pressing the clutch in and then realized the clutch was never disengaged while shifting. Is this normal??? idk much about how a manual trans is supposed to work while the car is off and stationary

you didnt "shift". You just put it in gear while the car was off. haha try doing that when the car is running and itll be a different story.

you can shift without the clutch while the car is running if your timing is good. Do not run out and try this though, as you can cause damage to the tranny if you don't know what you are doing.

Not the same thing... when it is off it will do it no prob, when it is running with the proper rpm and timing it can be done

shifting through gears with the car off doesnt really hurt anything
shift wth the car on, and you get that un bearable noise of your gears grinding to pieces. i have the same kind of car and everythng don it plenty of times

damn u dirty ricer u dont understand, if ur good wit it u can shift without the clutch without hurting the gears, now the synchros n berrings are a totally different story

Alright dumbass, why the **** would you want to shift your car without using the ******* clutch while it's running, as i see your signup date i see a newb.. theres no reason why you should be disrespecting other members due to the fact you have no say so..

He was just saying that you can shift without the clutch since an earlier post alluded to the fact that you can't. Granted, he did it in a demeaning way, but no more demeaning and unnecessary than your post. Its amazing that even a topic as simple as this can cause an argument. Just let this thread die, there is no more tech in it.

If your slave cylinder or clutch master cylinder goes dead and you insist on driving it, clutchless shifting can get you home just fine...

You have to time it PERFECTLY though, or you will hear a grind.
