Shifter moves when I let off the gas...weird....
When im driving my 00 coupe and i push the gas and let off the shifter itself moves a little bit. I can watch it move around like its moving up when it accelerates and then it falls back toward me when i get off teh gas to shift. Anyone else notice this also?

noticed this on alot of cars. seemed to never be a problem. i do beleive its just that your smashing throttle then fully releasing it and the engine torque is causing everything to move. just from what ive noticed

OMG, can't believe you guys are saying "its odd" This happens in most stick cars, it's just due to worn out shifter bushings and/or bad tranny mounts.

almost a full page of replies and finally this guy gets it right.
replace your shifter bushings with some ES units, and check to see if your torque mounts are worn out/torn.

Yes, but you can never completely stop it from moving. When a motor revs, it "flexes". (thats why flexpipes and springloaded bolts for your headers/cat even exist). When the top of your motor flexes towards your firewall, your engine mounts being like a pivot point, the bottom of your engine flexes forward.
Guess where your shift linkage is mounted? Transmission on the bottom side. As the tranny flexes forward it pulls the linkage with it, making your shifter tilt towards the back of the car. When your motor decerlates, it moves back, and thus, the shifter moves back.

Ummm it's because the engine/tranny is moving and your shifter is connected to the tranny. So it has to move. There is nothing to to help it flex. It is nothing to worry about.

Uuhh. Yes it is normal. Unless your car has cable linkage, it is normal.

it is normal, to a certian extent.
If his shifter is moving more than an inch, Id say he's got a mount problem.

Re: (Slopoke)
This scares me beacuse I don't do any work on my cars. I can do simple bolt ones, but thats it. I have no tools. I have also noticed its kinda rough going into gear, like its sticky kinda. I have some synchromesh I want to put in the tranny. How much of a fix do you think this is? Am i looking at shelling out alot of money or what to get something like this fixed.

I guarantee you it's your torque mounts. they are probably torn and worn out. Mine were torn and my shifter moved excessivly evertime there was a shift in the load on the tranny.

Re: (aZnjCC)
Is this going to hurt anything? Do i need to adress this problem asap or will my shifter just move and not damage anything.
