I was surprised to hear about this, too, but I guess the poly ureth bushings fall apart after a couple of years, especially if it's exposed to the elements.
Here is a thread talking about this:

Feel wise, I think they do feel better than OEM. I have used ES bushings in my other Honda's, including the current Civic and it definitely feels better than OEM. But seems like OEM will last longer. I may also try Mugen bushings, as they're made from a different rubber compound. But it is $68, which is pretty steep for 3 small pieces of rubber.

Re: Which shifter bushings should I get?
I thought "ES" was "Energy Suspension" bushings
Anyways who posted on here that actually HAS them?(other than D Nut?)
Ive had mine for over a year without any problems. Matter fact they just get better with time. At first they were way too stiff. After a couple months and a skunk2 half kilo shift **** they got a little softer and dd friendly.

Just bought a new EJ1 project a few months back, withing weeks of buying it the full ES kit was installed.
polyurethane is a better compound than that of OE bushings, stiffer and more resilient. Basically the whole point of bushings is to resist metal on metal abrasion, and to serve as a guide to keep the suspension geometry in proper order. On one project car my buddies and I worked on, we used hardened plastic round stock and turned it on a lathe to make bushings. Damn thing rode like a ****ing rock on the city streets, but get her on the track and it handled like a champ!
