shattered valves???
ok i was reading in an earlier post that most aftermarket valves will shatter if valve float happens....then i read that OEM honda valves will not shatter, but rather bend if knocked.....hmmm.....if this is true, then what type of forging/material are most aftermarket valves made of that would cause them to shatter upon impact, and not just bend?
[edit] btw, i'm talking about intake/exhaust valves

yeah, just click the link in my sig. You'll see where remains of the valves, seats, and guides mated with the pistons. One of the valve heads is permanently bonded to the second piston in the last pic.

I sucked an intake valve a while back, but HAD to get to work, so I drove it for about 5 miles with the valve head floating around in the cylinder. Finally, it jammed itself sideways in the port. Made hella racket before it wedged itself in place, but NEVER shattered.
Anyway, valves don't shatter. They bend and break, but pistons shatter. Here's a picture of that (not my car):

Ouch, some of these pics are just painful.
Honda valves are less likely to break than most aftermarket valves. Honda valves usually just bend, instead of the hat breaking off and then totally trashing the piston and combustion chamber with the hat bouncing around in there. You can see the difference in the pictures of the one cylinder that just bent and the others that broke. There are always exceptions though.

you guys OEM honda valves are 2 peaces. if you take your honda valve and put it in a vise grip and tap it softly it will break in half
