Default Setting Mechanical Timing

I am trying to set Mech. timing on my D16y8.

I am hearing conflicting theories on where to set the timing marks for the Cam Gear.

If I set the cam gear marks to the timing arrows on the plastic behind the cam gear the marks on the gear will be slightly advanced of the cylinder head surface.

If I set the cam gear marks to the surface of the cylinder head it will be 1/2 tooth retarded of the arrows.

Which do I use?

If you have a back timing cover there is a marking on the bottom that you could line it up to. The bottom of your cam gear should have a marking, line them up and your set.

I have the OEM cam gear and it doesnt have that mark.



do line up to the arrow or the base of the cylinder head?

quick pic but your off. Also i was thinking of the z6 gear that has the mark, y8 dont have it but you could still follow it if you know it. Basically its where the <FONT SIZE="3">.</FONT> from the 1.6 on the gear. Anyway line up the back cover and the side markings and you will be good.

being off half a tooth does that really even effect the car?
