Sell a car not under my name?
I purchased a car a few months back and didn't register it under my name. I have the bill of sale from the previous owner, as well as the title. I am wondering if I can sell the car to a friend without having to go through the hassle of registering the car under my name. I know I should have registered the car sooner but it stopped running shortly after I got it and I just got it fixed.
Btw, is there anyway to explain the situation to the DMV so I can drop the fees for late registration?

You haven't really provided enough information to really answer that question, every state has different laws about that, and it is important to know what condition the title is in. For example where i live it is required that the seller sign off on the title in the presence of a notary. Then there is a certain period from that time in which the buyer must go to the title office and have it transferred, i think a few months? I would recommend calling a title office in your state, or visiting their website. I would have tried searching their site but i am not sure exactly what state "where the trees grow" is located.
BTW the DMV could care less about your situation, if it was me i wouldn't even try explaining "my situation." There is a reason they work at the DMV and that is because they hate the world and pissing everyone off who walks through there doors is there little way of getting back at everyone.

Technically your not suppose to sell a car with a title without your name showing you once owned it in most states. Just tell the DMV the car was not running and that you just got it running and tell'em you got it as a gift for $100!!! hehehe just in case if you have to pay taxes it wont hurt to bad!!!

he said he is selling the car to a friend so if he sells it to his friend and hasn't filled in the info on the title they have no way of knowing that his friend wasn't the person that bought the car and let it sit for three months or whatever before getting the title transferred

Did you sign the title? If you didn't, you could just put your friends name on it. I'm only suggesting that since your friend would know what the situation is and assuming he's cool with it. I doubt it's "right" but who cares?

Re: Sell a car not under my name?
Well, the lady that I purchased the car from filled out the information on the back of the title so my information is on it. I also signed it.
In addition, she wrote out the value that I purchased the car for, as well as the date and such. She also sent in a small part of the title. I'm guessing that I need to first register the car under my name before I can do anything...

basically your screwed on that part and you have to title the car in your name and pay sales tax if your state requires it. You do not however have to register it i would believe, since you will just be selling it to your friend anyway.

Yeah, you have to change over the title if you signed it. The dmv might have some way to do it but youll most likely have to pay the taxes and tiltle fee.
