I pulled my off for a while with my test pipe, noticed nothing but that annoying CEL. Still throwing a 63 after the Catco went in.

It is important. But if you want the cel to go away this may work b/c my friend did this with his. He taped it up 1st and he put tin foil on the end to cover the o2 sensor up. Try it! wouln't hurt.

if your CEL is on your motor is in limp mode so you are running rich and eating gas ... OBD2 requires the second O2 sensor... convert over to OBD1 and solve your problem.. get a jumper harness and OBD1 ECU (which one you get depends on swap) ... if not get a highflow cat and put your o2 sensor back in.. i wouldnt drive around with a cel on all the time.. you'll never know if you are throwing a new code..

You're correct about this, but the car won't be in "limp mode". The job of the secondary 02 is just to tell the ECU whether or not the cat is functioning properly. I'd personally just install it in a bung in the exhaust stream, but if you get tired of the light or are concerned about the ability to be warned of other codes, I'd give one of the low-cost 02 simulators a try. I believe that the one I've seen is backed by a money-back guarantee, so you don't have much to lose.
Edit: I found the link for the simulator I was talking about. I believe they were also running a special on H-T for $25 shipped, so you may want to ask about that if you order one:

It might work...it does for some people. The 2nd O2 is used to detect catalytic converter health. The converter uses O2 to do its job so the signal is puts out is usually a pretty steady .6v -.8v. If you cover the tip with Al foil you are effectively taking away 'o2' from being sensed. So give it a try....its free.

Re: secondary o2 sensor not so important? (otakueric)
I bought a 2 sensor header for my 2 sensor system, But my primary o2 sensor's threads were messed up.
So what I did, was swap my secondary o2 sensor for the primary one, and put a plug in the secondary hole on the header. Then just plugged the sensor into the clip, so I wouldnt get a CEL. Then just wrapped it up around some wires up by my tranny.
No problems yet? And no CEL.

if i were to wrap the foil on the o2 sensor, should i use a rubber band? or would that somehow melt?

I didn't have to use aluminum foil or anything, But If you want to I'd use a couple breadties, or twist ties, or even a ziptie.
