the window won't roll down or up, but it's currently all the way up. makes a clicking noise when i press the button for it to go down. do i need a regulator or motor? can i fix it without getting either?

You might need a new regulator

Most likely some stripped teeth on the gear part of the regulator.

Yes. It's not too hard to do. Took me 2 or 3 hours since it was my first time doing it and I was being careful. It's best to have someone help you hold the glass.

Good idea. Shouldn't took too long, it's a matter of unbolting it and bolting in the new one. Did mine manual regulator in like 20 minutes.
