screw the rain

car still wont start after a night of rain. click click click nothing. and today i just noticed some white smoke coming from my starter. what the hell is this? it starts fine on a dry day but once it rains its all over. any ideas???

97Ej6mike 01-05-2008 01:42 PM

Sounds to me like water is getting on electronics somewhere, and that smoke you see is stuff burning.

Starter probably is cooked.

Re: (Syndacate)

finally got it to start with a blowdryer a hammer and a battery charger pumping juice into my batter haha

Next time wait for night time, open the hood, have a friend crank it, and look for a light show (sparks and arcing). It might give you a hint as to the problem.

lmao rofl

This thread is funny as hell

Historyg 01-05-2008 07:06 PM

what the hell are you banging with a hammer, because i know that is not going to fix anything, maybe next time you should bang your valve cover it might do absolutely nothing. it sounds like your stater is burnt out, or something in your wiring is not connected, if you continue with the hammer you might have a lot more problems on your hand.

slo6gen 01-05-2008 07:09 PM

^ actually sometimes when you hit a starter with a hammer it will cause it to work!!

Historyg 01-05-2008 07:47 PM

i dunno, but where i come from, if you are hitting your starter with a hammer to make it work, its time to get a new one. just imo

If you are hitting the starter with a hammer you are....

A.) Working on a ford
B.) Had childhood issues and are releasing unneccesary aggression
C.) Not giving a shit about the starter.

Honestly... why would you ever take a hammer to a starter... if its smoking? https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emhammer.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emhammer.gif

Thanks for backing me up, i thought i was going nuts, and i was about to go outside and start hitting my starter with a hammer for the fudge of it.

edit:
Hitting it with a hammer it will cause the starter to work in some situations but isnt very good for it. But if you need to hit it with a hammer it needs to be replaced soon anyway. worrying about breaking it now would be useless. If you have a D I have a starter you can have for 10 dollars it still works I tested it about 3 days ago.

Re: screw the rain (G2 Speed)

well i have h-t to thanks for the advice on hitting the starter, i read about 6 threads about starter problems and everyone said to hit it with a hammer and sometimes it makes it work. i hooked my battery up to a battery reconditioner and upped the juice and it started fine... one of the wires that goes to the starter is missing the plastic case around the plug so the wire is exposed i covered it in silicone glue attempting to waterproof it but i think my starter still got wet from the water coming up from underneath my car. should i replace my starter? and if so yes i will buy that one off you for 10 bucks haha https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Re: screw the rain (d[sick]sTeena)

If the temp fix works it is prob the connection and fixing that wire would be advised. If it doesnt work let me know you want the starter and well go from there.

Re: screw the rain (d[sick]sTeena)

for 10 bucks i would say to buy it,
as for the hammer hitting i too have used this method, not sure exactly what it does but i've heard tons of people who say to do this for all types of cars,
but like they said if it's at the point you need to hit it then it's about time to get a new one, https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Historyg 01-05-2008 10:37 PM

shit 10 bucks go for it, i need a starter for my project, but i think you need it way more, go for it even if it dosent fix the problem, which i am sure it will you will have a back up starter just in case

Hondacivic90ed 01-05-2008 11:23 PM

Re: (Historyg)

Hitting it with a hammer jars the starter solenoid that pushes the starter gear out into contact with the ring gear in the transmission and and simultaneously makes the contact to turn the starter gear. It can work for some time, but ultimately will require replacing the starter. You can get many dc motors to start again by hitting them with a hammer, however its usually due to worn or damaged contacts and it is only a temporary fix.

Re: screw the rain (d[sick]sTeena)

i agree with the temporary fix of hitting the starter with the hammer so u can drive you ONLY car to the parts store and pick up a new starter, its like hitting the fuel pump trick on a lot of gm cars when their fuel pumps go out, i wouldnt reccomend continuing to do it, but it gets you to a shop or the parts store and saves you the aggravation of paying to hhave it towed/potentially damaged. And second i own a ford and have had several and love them as much as my civic but the civic gives me more headaches than my blue oval products do. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

Haha I used to have a ford ranger a couple years back I had to work on it every day. Although not much I can say about my hatch it gives me as much trouble as the ford did. But at least on a quiet day you can't hear my honda rust. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif
