You have to contact your state's DMV, and ask about the process of obtaining an R title.

Laws on salvage and reconstructed titles vary from state to state. As smithenhiven suggested, contact your state's DMV to find out what you'll have to do.

i know in cali, you need to pass a safety inspection at a licensed auto repair shop and re-smog your car. it's pretty easy out here. my old roomate crashed his bimmer pretty badly (got t-boned, both passenger doors were pushed in about 2") and still was able to get it registered.

brake, lamp, vin, and smog

and last time i was at the dmv they said that the vin inspections could no longer be done at the dmv and have to be taken to the sherriffs station... and all this of course only has to be done the first time when it gets salvaged and if the car was sold the next buyer can register like normal

oh, and this is in ca.

All you have to do is bring the salvage title proof of insurance, some of sort of bill of sale reciepts for major components repaired, you may have to leave the vechicle over night to be inspected. Its not hard at all. I have had several friends do this and it works out fine.
