I just came back from Az. right now in 4k to 5k range, no problems whats so ever. But also mine is a GSR, not a B16.

you think honda would have released it if it would be a problem for freeway driving?

At 3000-3500 that engine isn't even near it's powerband, and isn't working hard at all.

ive always wondered this as well, i know the max hp on the band is at about 6.2k...for a d16 anyhow.. so, then the question here is, at what rpm is there excessive strain on the engine?? hence damaging it... does anyone know?

i'm pretty sure its alright, I mean fuel economy is where you'll suffer........I burn way more gas going about 80-85 down I95 then I do cruising at a steady 70-75

as long as you're not breaking in the motor, it's fine.

you think honda didn't consider people driving on freeways when they made that tranny?

exactly. think about where we make our most power (7K-9K), then think that 4K is just about midrange... so it's not a problem at all.

Excessive strain basically occurs when you are at or above the revlimit. Stock engines are designed to operate anywhere below the OEM specified revlimit. Operating engines at higher RPM but below redline basically would only lead to increased wear. If you have a fully stock performance oriented Honda I4 and you are below 5500 at cruise you have nothing to worry about, as long as proper maintenance is performed.

With good good maintenance and a good build 5k plus on a B20vtec is fine. Personally I think that would be fun as hell on the freeway. That would have you near the sweet spot when it comes to passing acceleration.

ill verify, chad is insane, it does sit at that rpm on the freeway and his exhaust is ******* LOUD

he used to have ear plugs for any freeway drives while he lived in arizona.

I really don't think their is anything wrong with it, as long as you do regular maintenace to the car, like we all do right . I been driving my car up to school for the past 3 years now. And I usually cruise at about 80mph at about 4600rpm, so I"m already in vtec but the doesn't seem to effect anything besides gas milage.
Besides we have one best rod/stroke ratio engines that honda ever made to rev incredible high and take the punishment.

That is the kind of **** I like!!

Before I finished the interior in my '63 I had the same scenario. People here talking about a Honda engine stressing over 5000 RPM on the freeway. Whatever. Try a 350 Chevy spinning 5600 RPM constantly at 80 on the freeway.

I don't see why you couldn't do this. A stock B20 doesn't redline till 7,000 anyways, so whats the issue?
