Default S40-e5f to S20 transmission swap - question about transmission codes

i got a tranny from a dude that claimed it was an si tranny. it said s20 on the code. i didnt know any of the codes for d series trannys so i t hought ok its an si. so im in the middle of swapping out my e5f transmission for the new s20 transmission. noticed where the numbers on the s20 trans say "A000" instead of "b000", which many fo you know that B is the si/ex and A is for the dx, right? correct me if im wrong. my E5f also has "A000" stamped on it as well. my question, how much of a difference will i see between the e5f and the s20 B, and how much of a difference between the s20A and s20B....

Saying "search" won't help anyone later who finds this thread when they search, plus it's against site rules to say that and not actually help.

As I understand it, the S20 is the D-series '92-'95 manual transmission (at least in the US) and the S40 is the D-series '96-'00 manual transmission (at least in the US).

I wasn't sure of the answer beyond that, but I found this:
http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/gearratiosdseries.htm

To ID : Look by the fill plug. You'll see a circle cast into the housing.
P20-A000 = DX,CX,VX trannys
P20-B000 = Si,EX trannys.
Here's the manual transmission codes for '92-'00 Civics I know:
S40-K4F = EX (D16Y8) (I confirmed this on a '98)
S40-E7F = CX (D16Y7) (I confirmed this on a '97)
S40-E5F = ?
S4C-??? = Si (B16A2)

I have no idea what an S40-E5F comes out of so it's difficult for me to answer your question.

D16Y7 equipped coupe/sedan most likely. Hatches had the same gearing, but with a longer final drive for '96 - '00. Also HX trannys are also stamped B000, but they're geared long, they just use a big bearing case for whatever reason.

I wish I had more confirmation for these identification numbers. I'd check more cars at salvage yards, but more seem to be automatics!

Anyone know why 92-95 Civic manual transmissions are referred to as P20 rather than S20 at the link above?

Yes. The case has a P20 cast in it somewhere (exactly where escapes me right now, but I'm going outside later and I have one laying on the floor of the garage so I'll check.) The white sticker says S20 so you'll hear people refer to them as either, but S20 is the more common designation you'll hear.

Update. The S20 transmissions have S20 on one of the white stickers and P20 on the other white sticker. They also have P20 cast into the case around the starter hole. S40 units have a P4A stamp in this location.

Good information. Thanks. Will we ever able to decipher the code of those genius Honda engineers?

Only thing I can think of is checking every '88-'00 Civic we come in contact with. Hell, all Hondas.

I've been known to go to Honda to check out the new cars each year, not to look at the cars themselves, but merely the new colors, names and codes. I can't be the only one who does stuff like that.
