Rusty rotors?

Rusty rotors?
I just finished my rear disc swap on my 97 HX and the rotors rust pretty bad. I'm not really worried about the rust on the friction area but the part that covers the hub. What is the best way to clean it and keep it from rusting?

Sand the hubs then paint them with some high temp paint. Did it to my rotors and they haven't rusted (much). There are a couple parts that I missed but for the most part they are rust free.

yea since they're rear, the high temp paint should work. I dont know about hte fronts tho. Mine were said to be zinc coated, and it seems to be working. I also live in salt capital of Canada. The put salt on the road like its no body's business. My car is rusting from places i thought it couldnt rust from.....whadda biatch

It works here in SoCal. I think there's a lot of variables on whether it will work well or not. Like say in a state where they use salt on the roads it probably won't work well.
It's not 100% but it works enough to please me. *shrugs*

I didin't acutally know you could mask stuff off and powder coat it but apparently you can. "nello a" how did the powder coat work out, was it flakey at the edge where they masked it off?
If I were you I would just live with it or just paint it with "brake paint" and expect to paint it every year or so. Oh and after a while the rust will not be as bright red, it will be darker and less noticible.

honestly, dont put a lot of money into it. Rotors are a wear item, you are going to replace them anyway. Temporary fixes are your best way to go, and just keep re-doing it. Either that, or live with it. I live with mine.

well ya. First you use all the cleaners that disolve all the oil off the metal, and then you blast it with water. Of couse that will cause more rusting.

Painting that area should work as long as you sand, scrap, and clean the hell out of them before hand. Otherwise the paint won't stick and it will rust all over again

Get them anodized. I had mine anodized and on my car for about 8 months now and no rust. The anodizing gives them a golden look. I used a cheap set of Canadian tire rotors. You'll have to machine them after the anodizing to remove it from the breaking area. Just do some web research on anodizing and find a place that'll do it for you.

Seriously though, why waste money on getting rotors anodized??
They are a wear item... Its cheaper just to replace them than to resurface. Crazy.... I can see trying to paint them if you have the paint sitting around, but I wouldnt even go out and buy paint to do this.

I can see your point pdiggity but in a salty environment, it's just a pain to have to replace them year after year. It's easier just to prevent the rust and have piece of mind. When the cooling finds don't rust, heat dissipation is easier and they are less likely to warp. Although if he intends on rough usage, brembo would be a better brand with anodization.

I bet theres the same amount of salt here, if not more because the road commission has a deal with the "big" 3

Aren't nickle plated rotors suposed to stay rust free? There's something they can plate the rotors with to keep them from rusting.
