Black and dry is carbon deposits... usually from crappy gas... can be cleared up usually by changing the plugs and running some fuel injector cleaner like chevron techron...
White generally indicates running lean or hot. this is generally caused by bad fuel tuning.
Black and wet is oil and or fuel rich... this can be either bad fuel tuning or oil leakage/blow by.
here's a link to a site but frankly the pics suck and the info isn't all that great.

or if you backfire and/or shoot flames that means your on the rich side.

Re: running rich? (joefuni)

Re: running rich? (joefuni)
A. that's fouled... get new plugs... just get stock replacements
B. You're talking about cam timing... not ignition timing.
Those do look like either they're very old or you are running rich...
What ecu do you have? what fuel mods... any fpr or fuel pump etc... a chip maybe?

Re: running rich? (NonovUrbizniz)
chipped p28, no fuel mods.... i got a timing light and everything, but where are the marking to signifiy what the timing is set at... i see the red marks and white marks on the crank pulley but i dont know how to tell where 16 degrees btdc is...

Re: running rich? (joefuni)
16 btdc is the red mark on a inductive non-advance timing gun...or
16 degree setting on an advance timing gun is the red mark
depending on what type of gun you have.
of course only if cams and crank it all at tdc....hahahahahah

Re: running rich? (joefuni)
put in new plugs and do a few runs and look at the plugs if they are stain that black
if so then your car is running
too rich or too timing too retarded..

Re: running rich? (RoyFokker)
My Denso irydiums looked like that after a few days. I replaced them with normal copper NGK's and that problem is gone eaven though I know i'm running rich.
