I have recently installed a new rear sway bar + subframe brace and I removed the axle back section of my OEM exhaust so that i had more room to work. When I was finished and I went to reinstall the muffler I found that I did not have the neccesary room to remount my axle back. SO I have been driving around for a little while with no muffler (my car is surprisingly quiet?). I even got pulled over and got a speeding ticket and the CHP didn't say **** about my exhaust? (not that I am complaining)

but my real question here is what are the effects of runnning an open exhaust like this. I do plan on getting a new exhaust soon but I gotta save up a little chedda....
SO what effect does this absence of back pressure have on my motor? anything I need to watch out for? or should I be alright for a couple weeks?

I've been running without exhuast for 2 years... its a good question though

anyone know? I know the back pressure helps the engine, but I don't think it will "hurt" it.

It wont hurt the motor, your losing power with no back pressure but it will be ok.

careful driving in rain, i had a golf and removed the muffler temporarilty....well make a long story short, i was on the turnpike and it started to rain, all that water got in the muffler, and it wasnt fun.....just watch out for rain

I only ask because I had a friend who used to have a CRX, one nite he ran over a man hole that stuck out of the road a little. He ripped of his whole exhaust and CAT and muffler and everything. He ended up seizing his motor later that year, probly a good 3-5 months later but the mechanic told him that it had something to do with him running around with no back pressure for so long?

umm - no. Free flow through the exhaust side will not seize a motor. The only thing you are doing that some may consider bad is killing the ozone. Backpressure does not prevent oil pressure from dropping or any other reason that the motor would seize.

iv had mine off for 1/2 a year now, no problems at all... i kinda like the tune it give off. doesnt sound like any mufflers iv herd.

i noticed a bit more power in the uper rpm band too.

I read this.. dunno how true it is:

less backpressure = makes more power in the top of the tach but might lose in the bottom

ya some times my car actually almost stutters or bogs when I am in the real low RPM's, but once I get it up a little it feels much better. It just started bogging out in the Low range so i wanted to make sure I didn't have anything to worry about

True, however not having a muffler doesnt effect the toxicity of your exhaust either. It will only really effect flow characteristics and sound. Nothing else.

Doesn't running open exhaust ruin your valves? Someone on H-T once said that you can and will burn your valves if you run open exhaust. Is this true?

I cant imagine why it would. Unless it's cut off really close to the head like open header or something.

Some parts melted on my friends civic from running an exhaust without the axle back..just watch out for that stuff. I started to burn some bushings haha.

Ya they are getting a little black coating from the exhaust fumes. but i think I will be alright. They needed to be replaced sooner or later anyways.

what about those all-motor cars.... is it good to run open pipe for the 1/4 mile
