running car in gear on jackstands?
would it be safe to run my car in gear on jack stands? almost like a dyno except no dyno. i just want to try something out. going to do some testing and i dont want to keep taking my car out for a spin. thanks

Yes it's safe. The car really isn't going 80-100mph because it's on air. You can seriouly go top speed.

everyone is saying its safe, but i would never try this. its just a bad idea. i've had cars fall off jackstands before, and if you're wheels are spinning 100mph, you're screwed. it will definatly cause damage, and someone could get seriously injured.

I'd run the wheels if I needed to move some fluids in the transmission or the engine or something to that effect (20mph or somthin i guess for a a few seconds), but I don't reccomend going all out. It's not nessesary is it?

u can't simulate driving situations by doing it tho...see there's no weight on the wheels that would actually act as a brake...yeah...the weight on the car would act as a brake, but it would also propel the car with intertia, too many factors that a jackstand run can't incoorperate

And I don't think it's safe either, cars fall off of jack stands all the time. 100 MPH on jack stands is a Darwin Award waiting to happen.

I placed the front on 2 jackstands and put it in gear with no tires and hit a 130 in my stock Eg woot woot,
Do This, Put that front on jackstands, take off teh tires, and put the tires under the car like 2 inches behidn the jackstands, and then put 2 blocks of wood behind the back tires so they don't roll back, and if the car falls off the jackstands it will land on the tire and still be to high for the suspension to hit the ground. Worked for us when we worked on car with jack stands.(Not recommended if you have expensive rims but stockies should do just fine)

yea you'll be fine if your jack stands on setup properly. cars fall off jack stands because idiot owners dont bother to see if the car is secure by moving the car side to side and seeing if theres any movement.
my car has been on jack stands since 9/2005 with weekly start ups and in gear warmups. i basically put it in 2nd gear and let it warmup for about 15 minutes. just set your jack stands up properly and you'll be fine.

I'm almost intrigued to see a tireless front end moving at 100mph fall onto the ground.
I did 20mph once... but I was on a full lift completely suspended in the air and it was only to check if my car would shift into gear or not. I don't see what you could possibly need to run your car up to 100mph for.

Considering that the speedometer will read 100mph at like 1/8th throttle in fourth gear, I don't think there's any danger of the car launching into something if it falls off the jack stands. Worst case scenario is it'll lurch four feet and stall.
If you don't believe me, go outside right now, put your car in fourth gear, rev it to redline and dump the clutch. That's approximating what will happen if it falls off the jackstands. Even though the wheels are spinning at 100mph, there's no load on them and, therefore, there is no force being generated that will withstand the friction of the pavement combined with the weight of the car smashing down on the suspension
