Default rpm just drops

everytime i start my car, i have to press the gas in order for it to turn on. once it's on, it doesn't stay at a certain rpm. if i let go of the gas, the rpm drops and it just turns off. it's a 98 civic ex. any idea on what it could be?

while you have it running is it missing? or running smooth? if it's not missing then it could be as simple as adjusting your throttle cable. if it is missing then it could be alot of things, check your plugs/wires and distributer. are you burning anything? smoking and did you overheat it? possibly headgasket/warped head?

where it connects to the intake manifold/throttle body. you can open the throttle body by hand where the cable connects, near the end of the cable there are 2 bolts that adjust your idle speed.

does it seem to be running fine when you have it started giving it gas?

yeah, it sounds like just adjust your throttle cable. make it idle a little higher. if it runs fine then that should fix it.
