rough cold starts
PROBLEM SOLVED: HEAD GASKET WAS EFFED -----HOPE THIS HELPS FUTURE SEARCHES
94 EX...STOCK, 144K miles
when my car's been sitting for awhile, the car kinda seems to have a rough idle on start up for about 15-20 seconds. If its really cold outside, its rough and not idling high like its supposed to. It'll idle rough and eventually make its way up to just under 2K, it'll warm up and idle smooth. The problem seems more intense the colder it is outside.
I cleaned the FITV and IACV. Seemed to help alittle.
Replaced cap, rotor, and spark plugs. Still gotta get wires.
Fuel Filter is 6 months old.
PCV is 6 months old.
Air Filter is clean
Probably about 30K on 02 sensor.
No oil in coolant, no coolant in oil.
No bogging/hesitant issues while driving.
NO CEL
I searched.
Any suggestions, advice?
Thanks in advance.

Re: (rivaladore)
mine does this, but i have my fitv blocked off.
those days under 20° outside really kill me.
how clean is your air filter?
also check your idle setting.
let car warm up till fan comes on twice.
disconnect 2p connector from iacv. idle will drop.
idle should be around 500-600, if not, adjust the idle screw on the throttle body.
turn motor off, reconnect 2p connector and reset ecu.
test

Re: (92ehatch)
I also have a very similar problem. 97 stock D16Y7, and the colder it is the worse it starts in the morning. In fact, a few mornings up here it was like -20 and for the first 5 or 10 seconds the idle was so rough the entire car shook. I've done all the tune-up stuff, and still same problem. However, oddly enough, it's only the first start in the morning. Even if it's freezing out all day and the car sits after my initial drive to school for hours, it starts up fine the second time.
Unfortunately, I don't have much of an answer for you OP. My engine has over 350,000 km on it, and burns oil, so I'm just guessing things are wearing out. Rings are getting old and compression is probably quite low. But if you're stock D-series like me, I'm just driving mine like it is until it dies and getting another engine. When you can pick them up for $400 from the wrecker there's no point in worrying too much about things I figure.

Maybe a Dumb Question at this Point But are the Cars Plugged in and is your Block Heater Working.
After the car warms up a bit w/ the Poor idle WHen your Driving through the first couple gears is there any power w/ hesitation.
When its idling and Running Rough how much Exaust Pressure is there lots like normal or very minimal and black/blue clouds?

And if you can Hook up a Fuel Pressure Guage and see what your Pressure Does during that Rough Patch, use a spark tester and back probe an Injector watch the Pulse.
The Noisy Engine Doesnt Really Concern me Because they all will Make a Taping noise in -18 and below Ive Heard mine after being Plugged in all night in -28 once it warms up the noises are gone.

I'm not sure if it could be the timing if it is running completley normal after warming up.

Re: rough cold starts (jtsmity)
You can clean the FITV, cleaning the IACV does little - you usually need to replace it. That sounds like it's the problem, too.
PS:
Same goes for the FITV too but those are usually cleanable (though sometimes they die).

Re: rough cold starts (rivaladore)
my civic does the same thing when it's really cold out and it's been sitting for a while. i can smell fuel when i start it up, but after it warms up a little it runs fine. i just figured it was because of the cold, but is this something i should look into?

Re: rough cold starts (rivaladore)
did a compression test......... 170-205-205-205......ehhh........I don't burn oil
Reminder, this is a stock d16z6, 144K. My friend used the same compression tester on his B16 and my compression is higher, so i know the guage isn't reading too high. Carbon buildup raising my compression i'm guessing.
I read on here that, if the valves need to be adjusted it will affect the compression, is that true???
I did try adjusting my valves a week before i did the compression test, but maybe i didn't adjust it perfectly. I'm going to adjust the valves again, and do another test
