Default Rod knock or bent valve?

Would a rod knock cause a car to overheat?

i have this loud ticking/knocking noise but can't tell where it is coming from. I place my ear to one side of the head it comes from the other and vice versa. But if i put my ear in the middle, it sounds like it coming from the block.

Is there any method to see where it is actually coming from? Its sounds like a ticking noise more that a knock though. The car doesnt overheat and my oil pressure is normal and full.

Any suggestions?

use a stethescope. it'll help you narrow it down. or use the screwdriver method in-place of the stethescope.

also, its idling at 1500, so timing could be a factor. I will check when i get off work and let you guys now. thanks..

of the subject of my eg...i finally got my h22 back from the shop and im using the f22 trans because of how much i want to boost. the shop guys said i was dumb for using the f instead of the h. But i explained to him that since im going to be running close to 20lbs, the longer middle gears of the f would be better for that much. plus im going for distance instead of the short time. what do you guys think?

for the track yes. but im going for cross country and lap times.

but i dont get it...when your going fast, short gears burn fast. more than 15lbs the trans is going to have to be rebuilt. i mean you run through gears like water in the radiator.
1,2,3 in all of 10 or less because of the shorter gears. engine revs too high and risk blowing the motor. hight hp's with a shorter trans you can't run continuosly at high speeds.

i might not be right, but that sounds right to me so dont flame me, enlighten me if im wrong!

not clear, the only thing you're asking about is a 'ticking' sound?
if so, look in to getting a valve adjustment. it's routine maintenance; not life threatening to your motor.

yeah i know its not life threatening but its kinda confusing. im just trying to see where its coming from just from the sounds. the ticking gets louder when when accelerating so i think its my valve lash, but it sounds like bearings.

I really doubt its rod knock. When I first started noticing the noise in mine, it was too late. Shot a rod through the block 1 week later. I'd pop the valve cover off and check your arms.

with a rod knock, the car would be hard to start or even start at all right? also, would it cause overheating?

yes it would be hard to start. I doubt there would be any overheating issues with rod knock. By definition the connecting rod loses the bearing between it and the the crank. The knock noise is caused by the rod slightly moving on the crank. It doesn't have any thing to with the coolant part.
